It is an ironical fact that Lady Wetherby was by nature one of the firmest believers in existence in the policy of breaking things gently to people. She had a big, soft heart, and she hated hurting her fellows. As a rule, when she had bad news to impart to any one, she administered the blow so gradually and with such mystery as to the actual facts that the victim, having passed through the various stages of imagined horrors, was genuinely relieved, when she actually came to the point, to find that all that had happened was that he had lost all his money.

But now, in perfect innocence, thinking only to pass along an interesting bit of information, she had crushed Bill as effectively as if she had used a club for that purpose.

Heartwarming

Another good love story yarn by Wodehouse. This one is less stereotypical than his later books, particularly without the fast talking male protagonist. I found it heart warming. Simon Vance is a serviceable reader for this one, definitely better than the reader in the other version.

What Fun Silliness!

Audio versions of Wodehouse novels are so reasonably priced I always keep some on my iPod for breaks from more intense listening experiences. As always, in PGW, the story is about class, money, inheritance, confused identities and engagements. This time the Brits visit America. Bees, a monkey, "wild" dancing and alcohol contribute to the silliness. Simon Vance provides the proper British tone essential to enjoying Wodehouse. Golfing, shown in the cover art, provides some humorous comments but does not really contribute to the plot.

Wodehouse brings out the best!

With all the various narration styles competing to interpret the Wodehouse array of characters, Simon vance does one better. He honors the writing. With style, and eye to subtlety and of course talent, this is by far one of the best readings of a Wodehouse gem!

My Favorite

My favorite of all of PG Wodehouse's books. I love Wooster and Jeeves but this one has more depth and not just humor.
