Publisher's Summary

In 2013, journalist Ginger Gorman was trolled online and terrified, but once the attack subsided, she found herself curious. Who were these trolls? How and why did they coordinate such an attack? And how does someone fight back?

Over the next five years, Gorman spoke to psychologists, trolling victims, law enforcement, academics and, most importantly, trolls themselves, embedding herself into their online communities and their psyches in ways she had never anticipated. She uncovered links between trolling, cyberhate and real-life crimes. She mapped out a cohort of men - mostly angry, young and white - who rightly or wrongly feel marginalised and disenfranchised and use the internet to express this.

Troll Hunting is an utterly engrossing, often frightening but ultimately eye-opening and important window into the mind-set of trolls and how they reflect a real aspect of our modern society. It will also change the way you think about the internet and what it means to be a human online.

great book, great journalism

in a brave, personal, sensitive approach Ginger sets sail to a very dark part of our society, one that has harmed her personally in the past.
she provides a great perspective of the problem, the road that led us here and potential solutions..

for almost all of the book she succeeds to stay unbiased and professional, a not-so-trivial achievement giving her past trauma from trolls.

More informative toward the end

The subject is dark, however, it isn't really explored in depth until the end of the book. The first two thirds really feels as though it's about the authors singular experience. That experience is story-worthy and this remains an informative, enjoyable listen but if I was looking for an education, I felt I hadn't fully had it.

Very good narration, like listening to a friend in your kitchen over a mug of tea.

Interesting & insightful but robotic delivery

Ginger is obviously a great journalist and storyteller but unfortunately I found myself getting distracted / tuning out in response to the narrators’ robotic delivery in parts. Sort of sounded like the automated recording at train stations at times. Which might be desirable for some people but not for me.

A thoughtful insight into a very human issue

Gorman’s insight and empathy makes this a triumph. After suffering herself at the hands of trolls, it says much about her as an investigative journalist & as a person that she delves below the common understanding of what trolling is, and searches for its true causes.
The internet doesn’t create trolls. People do.
This is a sobering and yet heartening look at a worrying issue.

Dark interesting painting hung with a Leftie Frame.

This is not a D.I.Y book on safe use of social media, it is however a timely reminder that there are people out there “Trolling” for Many reasons, some to alleviate boredom others to reach out inflict anger and pain. So be careful, don’t take the bait, move on, don’t be the next troll snack.
Ginger Gorman sets the scene on the catalyst for the vitriolic Troll attacks. As a journalist of Australia’s Free to Air ABC A Left Wing Biased Tax Payer funded broadcaster she met and did an article of two homosexual men that acquired a child from a Russian mother. She visited them them and thought these two “ Dads” and the little boy was just a picture perfect. Turned out the men paid the Russian Women $8000.00 for the boy and they were part of a international Pedophile ring. The boy was subjected to unspeakable depravity. The two men received 40 and 30 year prison sentences. This was sequence of events that attracted the “Vitriolic Trollers” my response as a reader was “Ya Think”
It is a in-depth thought full book with the self confessed feelings of guilt and took Ginger on a dark dark journey. Also ( from memory ) Ginger admits journalists like any one else are subjective, within that subjectivity the Left view of the World comes out in her presentation.
The words White Men, Far Right, Alt Right, Right Wing Social Media personalities etc even The POTUS Donald Trump is refereed to as the “Troll in Chief” Jordan Peterson gets a mention with the word “controversial” tagged. There is that indignation that Social Media gives to much voice to as Hillary Clinton called them “The Deplorable’s” and as such “ Free Speech “ should be within limits Merkel’s censorship of German Social Media is used as an example.
So would I recommend this book yes Lefties will love it, Righties (like myself) well get through the early snipes at Trump and the other biases and you will glean a good insight not only to what’s out there tapping on the keyboards, but also in my view a naive clever western women with her heart in the right place.

Incredible book

This book is a very valuable resource for people who spend more than an hour or two on line each day. I bought it because I wanted to know about trolls. Since so many of them are really horrible people, and I know Ginger's life was deeply affected by them; and researching for it, then writing it, left her totally washed out; I hesitated and hesitated before I got stuck in. But surprisingly, the book is not as traumatic to read as I thought it might be. In fact it was a page turner, and quite entertaining in places. And a very good narrator rounded it off nicely. Yep. Buy this book. You'll be glad you did. You'll be quoting it to your friends for years to come.

Insightful and essential information

Great story without great storytelling. The author presented a very personal story in an impersonal narrative. Not being familiar with Ginger Gorman's work, I couldn't tell if she was unwilling or unable to climb of the proverbial fence and deliver the raw emotion she write's about. This topic is important for our collective well being, online and IRL - lols - her final thoughts are key to moving forward in the looming reformation of our digital landscape.

A must read book for all

Such an important topic and very well researched and presented.
I was full of different emotions listening to this. It's real. It's honest.
the insight into various online cultures and how they can potentially change and impact the lives of so many people who are oblivious.
I couldn't get enough of it, raised so many questions.
Narration is very good as well, and easy to listen to.
