Training the Pointing Labrador will take you from deciding what kind of pup you want through all the stages of puppy choosing, raising, and training to the finished level. It applies to pointing and flushing dogs, for all types of hunting and all types of trainers. It leads you through the process from the point of view of the dog, so you can understand your student. Dogs are individuals and often require different approaches. Training the Pointing Labrador works for all retrievers and helps you step by step, from beginning to end.

Julie does an excellent job of breaking down the required tasks for a hunting labrador retriever. Her methods, derived from decades of firsthand experience, are more light handed than many trainers preach. While dog training is a process, she is very much result oriented for each micro category of training the retriever. It is as much about creating a relationship with your dog as it is fulfilling the tasks at hand.

I only left the teaching with one sizeable, unanswered question: what do I do if my labrador from a pointing pedigree doesn’t point naturally? How do I go about pushing the envelope to instill the behaviors without ruining a potential future of appointing labrador. Perhaps the point does not come out until the dog is a year old. I suspect I could ruin a dog in those previous six or eight months if I allow him to be a flusher.

In all, this is a great read. Even if you don’t have a pointing labrador much of the content applies toward creating a retriever relationship and working on obedience at hand, field hunting, and creating an ultimate gundog.

I met Julie 20 years ago at a BearPoint kennel APLA event. And I am happy she is still making an impact on the Labrador community!
