In 1935 Titus Brandsma was appointed spiritual adviser of the Dutch Catholic Society of Journalists and in 1936 he became the chair of a committee for the renewal of Catholic journalism. The spiritual adviser was the link between the board of directors of the Catholic newspapers and the bishops. Titus Brandsma fulfilled this function with much dedication. He always attended the meetings, worked on behalf of the journalists, both in social and legal questions, organised a retreat for them in 1937 and even developed a plan for the better training of Catholic journalists in 1938. At the end of 1941 and the beginning of 1942, Brandsma courageously opposed National Socialist advertising in Catholic newspapers which ended up with his imprisonment in January 1942.

In this volume we present early journalistic writings and all theoretical writings on the Catholic press and what Catholic journalism should look like. We also present the plan for the retreat for journalists.
