Publisher's summary

Freshly trained detective Johannes "Hannes" Niehaus is brand new to the Criminal Investigation Department. And his partner, unconventional veteran detective Fritz Janssen, isn't the least bit thrilled to train a rookie.

When a woman's body washes up on the nearby shores of the Baltic Sea, Hannes gets his first taste of real crime - and a chance to prove himself. Quickly the investigation pulls him and Fritz into a whirlpool of dangerous, decades-old cover-ups. As the death count rises, the clues begin to lead them back to the Third Reich - and to harrowing crimes some people will do anything to keep hidden.

With the dead woman's beautiful assistant to protect and a missing girl to find, Hannes navigates an ever-twisting maze of concealed horrors and enduring vendettas. Will he be able to catch the murderer before another innocent life gets caught in the killer's dark plan?

I did not enjoy this excellent novel

This police procedural murder mystery is set in northeastern Germany on Baltic Sea coast. It is translated from German. Time Heals No Wounds is a profoundly sad and haunting story. While set in the present time the cause of the murders of the adult brother and sister goes back to Nazi Germany. I did not foresee the twist during the final hour of the novel, but it clarifies everything. I cannot recommend this novel but those who like a very sad and haunting story topped off by an unexpected twist will enjoy it.

Great Characters, Great Premise

I highly reccomend this book, despite only three stars. Falkenberg is an excellent master of letters. The characters were charasmatic and well developed.

I readily admit my frustration with the mystery is due to my own lack of attention. I know I mssed a couple of key moments, but that s the nature of listening to books.

Still, it is a remarkably unique and surprising mystery.

Interesting procedural

The plot is interesting and the characters are interesting. There are good twists in the plot that kept me listening attentively.

A Plethora of Cliches or a bad translation? Can’t decide

This plot and story had promise. However, the writing and translation were so bad, so sophomoric and so riddled with dead end dialogue, I only listened bc I was packing up my house and I provided background and amusement (due to the many cringe worthy cliches).
The narration was equally bad. The reader adopted a breathy, urgent tone from which he rarely wavered, making the most mundane, commonplace actions and dialogue sound ridiculously significant.
If I hadn’t purchased it as a daily discounted book, I’d have asked for my money back.
Don’t bother—it’s that bad.

Maybe It Got Lost In Translation?

I didn't pay much for this audio book, otherwise, I probably would have returned it. The plot was OK, but the writing wasn't very polished, and the dialog was sometimes painful to listen to. Maybe it just wasn't translated well, but I didn't think much of it.

Where to start with the problems?

I'm not a harsh critic about anything, and am entertained by most books. However, this is the exception. The character development was lacking, or inconsistent, at best. Conversations between characters were unrealistic and idealistic instead of reflective of what they were actually dealing with. Plot details were repeated as if they hadn't already been presented. There was no thrill in this thriller.

Also, other characters constantly calling the main character an "athlete" instead of canoeist was off-putting.

I'll be testing audible's return policy.
