Publisher's summary

As a B-17 Flying Fortress bomber pilot, John Muirhead led missions into northern Italy, Germany, and Bulgaria during World War II. Ultimately, he was shot down and taken prisoner.

John Muirhead's re-creation of those years is a breathtaking mingling of ravaging horrors and silent, surreal images; of raw, tumultuous memory and elegantly paced narrative; of lightening humor and measured reflection.

Seldom has a listener been made to feel terror so viscerally. Rarely has a listener ascended the skies so thrillingly. And never has one felt so close to the numbing fear, the boredom, the eerie beauty, and the dislocated sensibilities of war in the air as in Those Who Fall.

Superb personal narrative of a WW II B-17 pilot

This memoir captured my attention immediately a d kept it throughout the book. Too many works of the bomber operations become obsessed with the stats and fail to tell the personal human side. This account captures the pilot’s thoughts and interactions with his crew while giving insight into the flying of a B-17 in combat. Great reader too.

Honestly Written and Performed

Wonderful read. Insightful prose. This book and the author represent the honesty and integrity of that generation. This book was obviously written after a lifetime of thought and consideration.

Amazing book.

One of the best ww2 books I either read or listened to. The narration is “right on” and couldn’t have been better. A+

Great descriptive

Unlike a lot of other historical books available for this period and subject, this book gives you a rich and graphic description of impressions, feelings, and the atmosphere. While I enjoy and appreciate the more generalized historical narratives, this book is supremely well written and moving. If you are looking for straight history it may not be what you want, but if you are looking for one person's vividly portrayed impressions of war, or this war in particular, it is well worth it.

Great story

This is the best performance of a narrator I have heard. First of all the story is fantastically detailed and very entertaining but the narrator delivers the dry sarcasm naturally and had me laughing out loud many times. It’s strange to say I was laughing at a story that in so many ways is tragic but at the same time the author makes you feel like you are right there the whole time. Great book and great narration, well done.

Excellent WWII airwar history

As has been suggested by literary reviews, this book deserves to be regarded among the best of war time personal histories. The writing is excellent as is its unromanticzed portrayal of the life of a airman in brutal combat.

Great Read for WW2 Flyers

Having read the Forgotten 15th first this book followed along from a first-person point of view giving the reader a great sense of how the individual Pilots felt as they flew their missions. As World War II history books go this story really captured the reader's attention and held it from the beginning to the end.

Great book

Loved it, I wish the Author spend more time telling about the captivity and his journey back to the states. But I really enjoyed listening to it.

Worth the read

I hadn't listened to any books by airmen who were shot down, so I decided to try this one. It was worth the read.
