What if you could take a vacation to your past?

With her celebrated humor, insight, and heart, beloved New York Times bestseller Emma Straub offers her own twist on traditional time travel tropes and a different kind of love story.

On the eve of her fortieth birthday, Alice’s life isn’t terrible. She likes her job, even if it isn’t exactly the one she expected. She’s happy with her apartment, her romantic status, and her independence, and she adores her lifelong best friend. But her father is ailing, and it feels to her as if something is missing. When she wakes up the next morning, she finds herself back in 1996, reliving her sixteenth birthday. But it isn’t just her adolescent body that shocks her, or seeing her high school crush—it’s her dad, the vital, charming, forty-something version of her father with whom she is reunited. Now armed with a new perspective on her own life and his, some past events take on new meaning. Is there anything that she would change if she could?

Story started out good, but got redundant. I like long books, and was hesitant to purchase this one, because it was on the short side. However… I wish it had ended LONG before it finally came to a conclusion. I make it a rule to try to complete all books I begin, and try not to see how much time is left. This one had me wishing the time would tick away faster. The climax came very early, while the conclusion of the book was the last two-thirds.

I was hesitant because it was sci-fi sounding but it was the most beautiful story narrated by my favorite narrator.

Beautiful Story

I'll say right up front that this story starts a bit slowly, unfortunately. It needs to set up the protagonist's life and what all they're dealing with, but it was enough of a straightforward drama that it wasn't grabbing me that much. But it's worth sticking with, once the real plot gets going, it rapidly becomes much more interesting.
It's a fascinating look at the issues a person would deal with if they suddenly found a way to go back into their past to try to change things, what their goals might be and how those evolve over time. It has a good hook that feels pretty fresh in having the ability essentially switch between two separate times, filling in all the missing events between them.
A couple minor gripes are that it explores some of the issues (moral and otherwise) that would be associated with that ability, but not quite as much as I'd like, and the conclusion seems to wind down pretty abruptly. Nevertheless, it's a very good book and a strong recommend.

Solid story combining personal drama & time travel

Marin Ireland could read an instruction manual and make it fun to listen to, but the story and characters Emma Straub created are wonderful. I didn’t want it to end.
