Publisher's summary

The former Amazon executive who launched and scaled Amazon Marketplace delivers the ultimate playbook on how to “think like Amazon” and succeed in the digital age.

“What would Jeff do?” Since leaving Amazon to advise start-ups and corporations, John Rossman has been asked this question countless times by executives who want to know “the secret” behind Amazon’s historic success. In this step-by-step guide, he provides 50½ answers drawn from his experience as an Amazon executive - and shows today’s business leaders how to think like Amazon, strategize like Bezos, and beat the competition like nobody’s business. Learn how to:

  • Move forward to get back to Day 1 - and change the status quo.
  • Become a platform company - with the right platform strategy.
  • Create customer obsession - and grant your customers superpowers.
  • Experiment, fail, rinse, and repeat.
  • Decentralize your way to digital greatness.
  • Master the magic of small autonomous teams.
  • Avoid the trap of past positions.
  • Make better and faster decisions.
  • Use metrics to create a culture of accountability and innovation
  • Use AI and the Internet of Things to reinvent customer experiences.

In addition to these targeted strategies, you’ll receive a rare inside glimpse into how Jeff Bezos and Amazon take a remarkably consistent approach to innovate, explore new markets, and spark new growth. You’ll understand the unique mindset and inner workings that drive Amazon’s operational excellence, from its ground-up approach to new digital markets to its out-of-the-box attitudes on innovation. Along the way, you’ll learn specific game-changing strategies that made Amazon stand out in a crowded digital world. These include actionable ideas that you can use to transform your culture, expand your business into digital, and become the kind of platform company that customers obsess over. Rossman also offers invaluable insights into the latest technologies, e-commerce marketing, online culture, and IoT disruptions that only an Amazon insider would know.

If you want to compete and win in the digital era, you have to Think Like Amazon.

A must read if you really want to innovate like Amazon

I have the print copy of this book but also purchase the audio version so I can listen when commuting because the ideas John Rossman identifies in this book need to be heard and considered repeatedly to get into action mode, and action is what brings these ideas to life.

Don’t just read this book and go to the next one. Use it as a guidebook to put the ideas into practice.

Amazing overview of Amazon Princeples

Well structured, easy to follow, with insights and real examples, some of them from the author own experience when he was working at Amazon.

Smart, picked up great ideas and concepts

Involved in "platforms" at a fortune 200 company. This book expanded my thinking...relentless thinking. Loved concepts of Day 1 Companies, 2 Pizza teams, 3 traits of business decay and "never ever give up".

Some good ideas, drowning in the author’s love of Amazon

The 50 ideas make the book worth listening to, but you will need to patiently sift through the author’s obvious fanaticism for all things Jeff and all things Amazon.
He even uses the phrase WWJD? (What would Jeff do?).

This was more useful than Scaling Up

John Rossman really goes in-depth into the inner workings of Amazon, and different ways to make run your business like big Jeff himself.

There was a lot of useful stuff in here, the biggest takeaways that I've used are the 6 page documents for bringing up business ideas and tracking fulfillment.

It was literally like reading Scaling Up for me but more useful 😂.

Highly recommend.

Great Book!

I bought and listened to John's first book "The Amazon Way" numerous times. Then a friend of mine alerted me to this one. After purchasing and listening to "think Like Amazon" I plan to buy a hard copy so I can have it at arms reach, If you find yourself stuck and seeking a jolt of creative and analytical inspiration, then stop what you are doing, get the book and read or listen to it ASAP.

Interesting insight into the world’s greatest company

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I may be a little biased because I love everything about Amazon, except for maybe the recent influx of foreign sellers cheapening the .com site but I digress. This book reads a little differently than a typical business book I can’t put my finger on exactly why. However it is insight after insight and tip after tip, even though apparently the author hasn’t worked at Amazon in over 14 years. The only thing I didn’t like was the overly long section about FAQs which I felt could have been drastically shortened. Otherwise, this was the first book in a very long time that I immediately started listening to a second time is soon as I finished it. Absolutely fantastic.
