“Of every book written by anybody associated with the Trump administration, in any way, [this] is absolutely the one to read.” —Rachel Maddow

INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER | A celebrated foreign policy expert and key impeachment witness reveals how declining opportunity has set America on the grim path of modern Russia—and draws on her personal journey out of poverty, as well as her unique perspectives as an historian and policy maker, to show how we can return hope to our forgotten places.

"This book has a miraculous quality.... As a memoir this is hard to put down; if you are seeking a better American future you should pick it up.”—Timothy Snyder, New York Times best-selling author of On Tyranny

Fiona Hill grew up in a world of terminal decay. The last of the local mines had closed, businesses were shuttering, and despair was etched in the faces around her. Her father urged her to get out of their blighted corner of northern England: “There is nothing for you here, pet,” he said.

The coal-miner’s daughter managed to go further than he ever could have dreamed. She studied in Moscow and at Harvard, became an American citizen, and served three U.S. Presidents. But in the heartlands of both Russia and the United States, she saw troubling reflections of her hometown and similar populist impulses. By the time she offered her brave testimony in the first impeachment inquiry of President Trump, Hill knew that the desperation of forgotten people was driving American politics over the brink—and that we were running out of time to save ourselves from Russia’s fate. In this powerful, deeply personal account, she shares what she has learned, and shows why expanding opportunity is the only long-term hope for our democracy.

As a British-American, I was grateful Ms. Hill paid careful attention to the ways her cultural and economic history shaped her approach to the world, especially as a woman. She is modest about her success, sometimes too much so (in the way that women often are), but also vulnerable and open about the obstacles she had to overcome to gain her experience and insight. I wish she had spent more time on her years in Russia and less time on the blob, but overall I really did enjoy her story.

Insightfully written

Very insightful comparisons and analysis on the lost segments within the UK, US, and RU societies, highlighting distinctions upon which discriminatory practices have been based.

There is not as much of the NSC and impeachment concerns as I had hoped, but she still conveys a perspective worth hearing.

The last three hours or so consist almost entirely of her presenting solutions to her perspective of societal faults. This gets a bit tedious - almost preachy, but she knows what she is talking about has the credentials to back it up. It is just not what I was expecting.

Some of what I expected; some not.

As expected, Dr. Hill has both written and presented a wonderful book. She is what the collective we should strive to be.

Well done.

This book really helped me get a deeper understanding of how hard it is for kids in poor or low income households to get opportunities to live their potentials. The network of people and places a person needs to get in the door isn’t there for kids without opportunities to afford music lessons, dance and foreign language lessons, debate clubs, not having experienced travel and dining opportunities can cause not fitting in, sounds small but isn’t when going away to higher learning - Fiona explains how people get left behind. I would love to know how to help. Thank you for sharing your journey. You are extraordinary

I loved Fionas voice, accent and all everything she said.

very surprised at how relevant to US issues, though written by a British person with deep British roots

Very relatable

I was not sure quite what to expect from this book beyond a recounting of how Fiona Hill ended up as a key witness in the first Trump impeachment trial. It was so much more. She brought together her personal life experiences with the historical changes in the UK US, and the USSR to tell a compelling story of overcoming obstacles laid down by misguided leaders and policy decisions. She presents a clear path forward as well.

Fiona rocks this book and reading

Well written and narrated, this non-fiction story is part autobiographical, part an equality-for-women tome, and part a historical record of the Trump administration. A key witness to the Trump impeachment, Fiona Hill was senior director for European and Russian affairs on his National Security Council staff - but, to Trump, a floor lamp, i.e., a woman. As we all know, Trump gave time only to his inner circle of yes-men.

Although the book is well done, the autobiographical information about Fiona Hill's background interesting; there isn't much in the way of news in this book. You'll find yourself nodding with confirmation from one more source of the inconceivable damage Trump has done to America. If you've wondered what you, as an individual citizen, can do - Fiona Hill provides numerous ideas,

As a Russophile and an Anglophile this memoire really hits all of my interests. Fiona Hill is a fascinating woman. She grew up in the UK, spent some time in Russia and then finally settled in the United States. I like how she interweaves her own story into the Geopolitical events happening in all three countries. Definitely would recommend.

Awesome

wonderful overviews of Trump, general economic situations in the U.S., England and Russia, insights into what needs to be done to restructure our situations to provide better lives for us all - well worth reading

intelligent, thoughtful, informative

Dr Fiona Hill conveys an improbable and amazing life story, while applying her undeniable intelligence and erudite education, to try to make sense of the social dynamics that make her life story the "exception that proves the rule" due to endemic social and geographic immobility. Due to her participation as a national security advisor in the Trump administration, she had a firsthand glimpse into the deep dysfunction that he brought to the White House. She does not really speak very much about her testimony before congress during the first Trump impeachment. However, she has a lot to say about the populism that brought Trump to power. She is able to convey the connection between the social and economic hardships that pervade in stagnant regions of the US and UK, and the likely dynamics by which this engenders the dissatisfaction with government that leads to the populism that makes people vote and make decisions against their own best interests. Brilliantly written and, since she is her own narrator, I can't help but comment on her voice, and her northeastern British accent, which I found to be a joy to listen to.

Excellent combo autobiography & social commentary.
