There Is Confusion written by Jessie Redmon Fauset (1882-1961) in 1924, is her first of four novels where she examines the experience of being black and middle-class while contending with the challenges of American racism in a non-stereotypical way.

The novel, set in Philadelphia and New York City in the early 20th century, follows the interwoven lives of three friends, Joanna, Maggie, and Peter as they pursue their dreams, navigate love and grapple with the struggles of their time.

There Is Confusion is a significant 20th century work of African American literature. The themes of ambition and success, love and relationships, racial prejudice and discrimination, class and social mobility, rage, hope and pride, prevalent throughout the novel are as relevant today as they were over a hundred years ago.

This narrator brings these characters from the 1920s to life with remarkable depth and clarity.

It is amazing to follow their story and remember that across ages, the duality of selfishness and selflessness, of manipulation and honesty, has resided within us— yet the better angels of our nature persist.

You will leave this audiobook with newfound appreciation of your own friends and journey.

Beautiful narration of a timeless troupe

After reading Victoria Christopher Murray’s historical fiction, “Harlem Rhapsody” about author Jessie Redmon Fauset, I became intrigued by this writer who was unknown to me. I wanted to know more about Ms. Fauset’s work and decided to read her first novel, “There is Confusion.”

Ms. Fauset’s in-depth characterizations drew me into the lives of childhood friends with very different yet overlapping stories intertwined with the threads of racism experienced by “colored” people. How they coped and their realizations which emerged in the early 20th century are revealing of excellence in the Black race today.

It is a love story combined with ambition and misinterpretations that keep lovers apart. Some characters are likable, others are not. Your choice. In the end, all are understood.

I thoroughly enjoyed this engaging book and “binged read” when I should have been doing something else.

Awesome depth of characterization
