Publisher's summary

The "beautiful" (Chicago Sun-Times) novel from the prize-winning author of Come Together, Fall Apart.

Miraflores never knew her father, and never thought he wanted to know her. But when she returns to the Chicago suburb where she grew up to care for her ailing mother, she discovers that her mother and father were greatly in love, and that her father had wanted a daughter more than she could have imagined. Now, Miraflores secretly plots a trip to Panama, in search of the man she hopes can heal her mother - and who can help her find the pieces of her own identity. What she finds is unexpected, exhilarating, and holds the power to change the course of her life.

Decent story but the narration is atrocious!

The absolutely terrible Spanish pronunciation was completely distracting and all but ruined the book for me. She’d have been better off just reading it in straight English instead of trying to manufacture a Spanish accent that sounded more Filipino than Spanish. It really didn’t even make sense to have an accent even implied, as it was clear the characters were speaking to each other in Spanish (though written in English). Please, please, please have native language speakers narrate the languages they’re supposed to represent. It’s like nails on a chalkboard for those of us who actually speak the language to listen to 9 painful hours. If not for the fact I have to discuss in a corporate book club, I wouldn’t have been able to finish the book on account of the narration alone.

Accents?

I purchased the book but wanted to have in audio to listen while I jog, I heard from someone in our book club that they couldn’t get over the “accent” the reader created for the Panamanian characters. I have to agree, they are borderline offensive. Love the book but strongly dislike the made yo “accent” this audio needs a REDO!!!
