"If you liked American Gods by Neil Gaiman or Circe by Madeline Miller, be sure to pick this one up." -- Timeworn

A sweeping tale of forbidden love and warring gods, where a young Inuit shaman and a Viking warrior become unwilling allies in a war that will determine the fate of the new world.

There is a very old story, rarely told, of a wolf that runs into the ocean and becomes a whale. . .

Born with the soul of a hunter and the spirit of the Wolf, Omat is destined to follow in her grandfather's footsteps-invoking the spirits of the land, sea, and sky to protect her people.

But the gods have stopped listening and Omat's family is starving. Desperate to save them, Omat journeys across the icy wastes, fighting for survival with every step. When she encounters Brandr, a wounded Viking warrior, they set in motion a conflict that could shatter her world. . .or save it.

"An epic, sweeping tale of self-discovery....An intriguing story and a fantastic finale. It felt like a story worth telling and definitely one worth reading."—Hypable
"Truly an epic journey. Inspired by Inuit history, culture and mythology, the author has crafted an imaginative and compelling story in which human, animal and god alike struggle for survival in the stark environment of America's far north. Young shaman Omat is a memorable protagonist."—Juliet Marillier, author of the Sevenwaters series
"Brodsky takes the one surviving record of a meeting between the Norse and the Inuit and spins it into a compelling and fast-paced tale."—Kirkus

"A propulsive, deeply researched glimpse into a time and place that will be familiar to few, and which proves to be as fascinating as any fictional universe."—B&N Sci-Fi & Fantasy Blog
"Brodsky's research shines through....The pages fly by in a tense narrative that manages to be both epic in scope and deeply personal."—Timeworn

Although I will say the first part of the book was hard to get through via subject matter and accepting issues raised from other cultures, the second half of the book was absolutely divine. The story telling was rich and exciting, and I genuinely cared for the characters. This helped the story greatly because I was invested and proper time was taken to provide back story. I really did love this book.

Pleasantly surprised

This is honestly the best book I’ve listen to all year and it’s only February
It’s a really original story and I found myself having a physical reaction to all the little twists and turns throughout the story
I also learned a lot about Inuit and Norse culture

Loved this story. If you liked Circe or Song of Achilles, you’ll enjoy this one too.

Couldn’t turn it off

This was awesome! I loved the intimate story, character development of our protagonist (even if Omat's perception of womanhood did annoy me for most of the book), fantasy in the coat of mythology of gods walking among people, the pacing as well as the slow burn romance.

I also truly enjoyed the audiobook, narrated by the author, which I flew through.
Listening to this audiobook during my February winter walks was such a treat, I'm a little sad that it wasn't even longer, though, truly, I think that the story was just the right length.

Also, while I am no authority on the representation whatsoever, I, personally, thought that the author described the Inuit culture with the deep love and respect. I knew nothing about it beforehand and I found the spirits, tales and people vivid and alive, jumping right out of the page.

This was awesome!

I'm not one that picks favorites easily, but I can and do confidently say that THIS book is a favorite. I LOVE Ohmat and the life journey they experience that we get to witness. I enjoyed the addition or Norse lore and how the author kept it from feeling too random or out of place to the story. They addition of Norse gods feels like it should be wrong, but it was written so well. My only wish would be more to the ending or a sequel. I want to know more about the developed relationship that developed in this book.

Still my favorite

A breath of icy fresh air. Sometimes a difficult listen due to the themes and tension that the author skilfully builds. Also warning for SA.
Overall I’d definitely recommend it.

Something new

I found myself enjoying Omats journey in the world it is only at the climax of the story that I was disappointed and dissatisfied with how it all plays out. I understand the fantastical divine aspect but I can’t help but the think what if things where written slightly different mainly a lack of divine intervention in omats reality.
Overall good book just wanted a better finish.

Would have been better without the magic and divine intervention.
