Publisher's summary

A sweeping tale of clashing cultures, warring gods, and forbidden love: In AD 1000, a young Inuit shaman and a Viking warrior become unwilling allies as war breaks out between their peoples and their gods - one that will determine the fate of them all.

"There is a very old story, rarely told, of a wolf that runs into the ocean and becomes a whale."

Born with the soul of a hunter and the spirit of the wolf, Omat is destined to follow in her grandfather's footsteps - invoking the spirits of the land, sea, and sky to protect her people.

But the gods have stopped listening, and Omat's family is starving. Alone at the edge of the world, hope is all they have left.

Desperate to save them, Omat journeys across the icy wastes, fighting for survival with every step. When she meets a Viking warrior and his strange new gods, they set in motion a conflict that could shatter her world...or save it.

A Craftily Woven Tale

A must read/listen for those who read magical tales. It is a convergence of Inuit, Norse, and Christian mythology, beautifully told through a unique perspective. Great care was taken to make this feel as if you are sitting by a fire, at night, listening to a wise, village elder recount oral traditions.

Heads up for survivors of violence: there are rape scenes.

Would have been better without the magic and divine intervention.

I found myself enjoying Omats journey in the world it is only at the climax of the story that I was disappointed and dissatisfied with how it all plays out. I understand the fantastical divine aspect but I can’t help but the think what if things where written slightly different mainly a lack of divine intervention in omats reality.
Overall good book just wanted a better finish.

HORRIBLE NARRATOR!

I tried, I honestly tried. I was only able to get about half way through the 2nd chapter before the female narrator was too much for me to bear. I'll be returning this book, and keeping an eye out in the future, ever hoping that audible will come out with a better narrator for a story with a ton of potential!

This was awesome!

This was awesome! I loved the intimate story, character development of our protagonist (even if Omat's perception of womanhood did annoy me for most of the book), fantasy in the coat of mythology of gods walking among people, the pacing as well as the slow burn romance.

I also truly enjoyed the audiobook, narrated by the author, which I flew through.
Listening to this audiobook during my February winter walks was such a treat, I'm a little sad that it wasn't even longer, though, truly, I think that the story was just the right length.

Also, while I am no authority on the representation whatsoever, I, personally, thought that the author described the Inuit culture with the deep love and respect. I knew nothing about it beforehand and I found the spirits, tales and people vivid and alive, jumping right out of the page.
