This is a witch hunt. We're witches, and we're hunting you.

From the moment powerful men started falling to the #MeToo movement, the lamentations began: This is feminism gone too far, this is injustice, this is a witch hunt. In The Witches Are Coming, firebrand author of the New York Times best-selling memoir and now critically acclaimed Hulu TV series Shrill Lindy West turns that refrain on its head. You think this is a witch hunt? Fine. You've got one.

In a laugh-out-loud, incisive cultural critique, West extolls the world-changing magic of truth, urging listeners to reckon with dark lies in the heart of the American mythos, and unpacking the complicated, and sometimes tragic, politics of not being a white man in the 21st century. She tracks the misogyny and propaganda hidden (or not so hidden) in the media she and her peers devoured growing up, a buffet of distortions, delusions, prejudice, and outright bullsh*t that has allowed white male mediocrity to maintain a death grip on American culture and politics-and that delivered us to this precarious, disorienting moment in history.

West writes, "We were just a hair's breadth from electing America's first female president to succeed America's first black president. We weren't done, but we were doing it. And then, true to form-like the Balrog's whip catching Gandalf by his little gray bootie, like the husband in a Lifetime movie hissing, 'If I can't have you, no one can' - white American voters shoved an incompetent, racist con man into the White House."

We cannot understand how we got here - how the land of the free became Trump's America - without examining the chasm between who we are and who we think we are, without fact-checking the stories we tell ourselves about ourselves and each other. The truth can transform us; there is witchcraft in it. Lindy West turns on the light.

Critic Reviews

"A biting and profoundly funny social and political critique of rape culture, toxic masculinity, and misogyny." (Library Journal)

"One of our foremost thinkers on gender unveils her unifying theory of America: that our steady diet of pop culture created by and for embittered, entitled white men has stoked our sociopolitical moment. Adam Sandler, South Park, and Pepe the Frog all come under West's withering scrutiny in this funny, hyper-literate analysis of the link between meme culture and male mediocrity." (Esquire.com)

"A cornucopia of shrewd cultural observations.... [West's] sharp wit and no-nonsense sense of humor also shines through.... [West] drives home the critical issues of our time while taking time to tickle our funny bones. Satirical, raw, and unapologetically real, West delivers the bittersweet truths on contemporary living." (Kirkus Reviews)

Editor's Pick

Hallelujah, the witches are here
"When you take one of the funniest and smartest human beings of all time and then give her a book title about witches, how could it be anything but amazing?? I’m Lindy West’s #1 Stan, and when I heard this book was coming out, I very nearly came into work on my day off to try to get a copy. (If you must know: editor Courtney, i.e. an angel, texted to tell me the copies weren’t ready yet, saving me a two-hour round trip on the train.) Fast forward to early last month, when I finally got my hands on The Witches are Coming and drank it down in huge gulps by the pool. Lindy West’s essays are as sharp as ever, mining juicy tidbits from her life, such as why she finally quit Twitter, how a local Facebook swap group went awry, and her unexpected obsession with Guy Fieri. Whether you’ve been following Lindy West since her Gawker days, became an admirer after watching Shrill, or are new to the fan club, welcome. The witches have arrived, and I am here for it.."

Not about witches

I live in DC and work in advocacy, so sometimes I just want to turn my brain off after work. I saw this had great reviews and bought it without reading any actual review or book summary. Fun fact, this book is not a fun light read about witches, as I had originally assumed. A chapter in, I thought I would have given it up to turn my brain off for something lighter, but her hilarious, serious, important, and new takes on the crumbling state of our world kept me through to the end, with actual laughs and actual tears along the way. What I discovered is that I’m a witch, and hell yes, I’m coming for you.

Write all the books, Lindy West!

The writing of Lindy West has gotten me through my twenties and through my mid thirties. As a woman from the same region and the same age, I have benefited from Lindy’s voice in my head as I navigate what the f**** is going on. She puts into words the thoughts and feelings of frustration with systemic injustice I’ve had while educating me how to dismantle it, or at least interrogate my own part in it. This book is giving me hope in these strange times.

Laugh, cry, learn

I simply adored this book. Lindy West masterfully encapsulates what is happening in our world in the context of her life and the lives of others both similar to and different from herself. I wish this audiobook was five hours longer.

Lindy tells it like it is

I love how Lindy just says what most of us know and experience. With her strength and boldness Lindy is changing cultural norms, even though she faces extreme backlash. Hurray for Lindy for standing strong.

More Lindy West Please!

I wanted this book to be longer! She’s amazing! Every bit of this book of essays is astonishingly well thought out. Her narrating is also fantastic because it feels conversational and so real. A true voice of our generation.

Trump is a racist shart!

The Witches are coming is an inspirational look at our current shitty situation (aka president). Lindy West always verbalizes my exact feelings but way more eloquent and intelligent than I ever could. Thank you for that. We must unite witches!!!

Geezee

A whole lot of wining. I am sympathetic to all of her causes. But enough is enough. Contrary to what she leads you to believe men are not the enemy. Small minds are. Don't waste your time or money on this book.
