Publisher's Summary

It will soon be another cold winter in the Ukraine. But it's 1941, and things are different this year. Max, the devoted caretaker of an animal preserve, must learn to live with the Nazis who have overtaken this precious land. He must also learn to keep secrets - for there is a girl, Kalinka, who is hiding in the park.

Kalinka has lost her home, her family, her belongings - everything but her life. Still, she has gained one small, precious gift: a relationship with the rare, wild, and wily Przewalski's horses that wander the preserve. Aside from Max, these endangered animals are her only friends - until a Nazi campaign of extermination nearly wipes them out for good.

Now Kalinka must set out on a treacherous journey across the frozen forest to save the only two surviving horses - and herself.

Beautifully Written and not overdone

What made the experience of listening to The Winter Horses the most enjoyable?

I had never heard a story like this before, it is beautifully written, the violence is not overdone, the narration seemed to fit the writing style, and the little girls character is captivating.

What a fabulous written war story

What an amazing story of horses, war and reminder that good things can happen when surrounded by war and sadness. Also that even though their your enemies there are still some good people left.
The flow of the story pulled you in to never want to hit the pause button! I was glad I was on a trip when listening.
I love horses. This book brings out the fantasy of a girl who desperately needed to be loved and protected. This young girl gets all of that and much more from horses and a dog. This is how young and old see themselves communicating with a horse but we don't speak of it. We'd sound crazy.
I'm so sorry the author has died of cancer this year 2018. He was an amazing written!

A Kind of Children's Book

I didn't realize this was a kind of children's book. You wouldn't think so since it includes genocide of by humans and animals but the narrative style is simple and targets kids. I love Philip Kerr but couldn't get through this one.

Captivating!

This was such an incredible story of love and perseverance during one of the most difficult times in our worlds history. As an equestrian horse lover myself I found myself hooked, cheering on these unique characters, dying to know how it would end. As a new author myself I was also impressed with the writing and talent for storytelling. The narrator also did a superb job. This was my first ever audiobook and I’m so happy to say it did not disappoint!

Couldn’t finish.

I love horses, and with the current tension between Russia and the Ukraine, I hoped I would learn a bit of history and context for the present situation. But after a while, the sing-songy narration began to grate on me and the story moved so slowly, it became unbearable.

Absolutely beautiful story

I don't often give 5 stars, but this book deserves it. Heartbreaking but endearing, this is a must read for anyone who loves historical fiction.

This book captivated me from the beginning. Has a feel of being real. I enjoyed the voice of the reader. He distinguished between the characters well.
