Never had there been as close a bonding as the one that existed between the daring and adventurous young Lord Jaxom and his extraordinary white dragon, Ruth. Pure white and incredibly agile, Ruth was a dragon of many talents, though almost everyone on Pern thought he was a runt that would never amount to anything.

But Jaxom knew better, knew he could teach his dragon to fly and to destroy the deadly silver Threads that fell from the sky. Disobeying all rules, Jaxom and Ruth trained in secret. Their illicit flights seemed but a minor disobedience - until they found themselves in the path of danger and in a position to prevent the biggest disaster of all.

I’ve read all of Anne McCaffrey’s books, multiple times, but have now been listening to them as I crochet. Fortunately, so far, I haven’t run across any Pern stories that are abridged. Yay! for audiobooks!!

I'm a huge fan of Pern! This narrator did a great job breathing life into my favorite characters. He expertly portrayed Ruth, Jaxom, and Master Robinson as well as many others without any confusion. I always knew who was talking. well done Master Hill!

Long live the dragons if Pern!!!

Anne probably did things too well with this book. She focused more on how the people were to affect each other, and maintained the tension she’d built and established in the first 2 books. She was able to seamlessly describe the setting, whether the context was set in a supposed past or a possible future. There are moments when it’s a bit hard to follow. I’m not sure if that’s because the of the dense descriptions, which are just info dumpy enough to help you follow the flow of the story, or because of the chosen voice actor. You have to be doing something else while letting this book play. Dick Hill is an interesting choice. The majority of the time he seems to know exactly how to inflect, how to bring the characters to life. Sometimes it seems he gets characters voices confused, so it’s easy to forget who’s who. There’s just enough diversity to not be a distraction. The pacing of his inflection matches the pacing of McAffrey’s writing just about perfectly. That’s my take, and I never read past the first book.
The switch to focus more on Jaxom may be jarring, but the transition feels natural, and the importance to focus more on Jaxom becomes clearer as the story progresses. His relationship with the creatures in the book would probably not be given the proper due if he weren’t the main character in this part of the saga.
