For two centuries the dragonriders have been practicing and training, passing down from generation to generation the Threadfighting techniques learned on the fly by their besieged ancestors. And most of the Lord Holders are prepared to protect their people, to provide sanctuary, to assemble groundcrews to search out and destroy any Thread that might be missed by the dragons soaring overhead. All but one.

Even now the ominous signs are appearing: the violent winter storms and volcanic eruptions that are said to herald the approach of the Red Star and its lethal spawn. Impossibly, one stubborn Lord Holder, Chalkin of Bitra, refuses to believe - and that disbelief could spell disaster for all of Pern. So while the dragonriders desperately train to face an enemy they've never fought before, they and the other Lord Holders must find a way to deal with Chalkin and protect Bitra.

Another Good Book

good story. but was unable to tell the gender of the character speaking at times.

Fills in the large gap in info between the First Fall and the rest of the Pern novels; tells a marvelous story along the way

Much is explained concerning the loss of vital tech, the evolution of the governing system and the development of the craft halls, especially the Harper Halls. It is also an inside look at the newly impressed young dragons and their weirlings as well. And of course that is all contained within an exciting new tale of Pern.

I like Dick Hill’s voice, and the way he varies it for each character.

Mr. Hill’s breathing was invasive at points. Hope he wasn’t nursing a cold or something.

I am making my way though the pern books love these books soon much. can't wait to start the next one.

Good narrator

I just love the idea of Pern. Using all they have brought with them and after they run out or breakdown, having to rely on records and generational teachings.

Anne m is a fantastic writer. I relisten to her books frequently. Asa soon as I am done with this I will pick another one.

Loved it! As a Pern fan, I was hesitant about audible versions measuring up to the imagination that Anne McCaffrey inspires. But this performance was excellent!
