Publisher's summary

In the six months since Anthony, Lucy, and George survived a night in the most haunted house in England, Lockwood and Co. hasn't made much progress. Quill Kipps and his team of Fittes agents keep swooping in on Lockwood's investigations. Finally, in a fit of anger, Anthony challenges his rival to a contest: the next time the two agencies compete on a job, the losing side will have to admit defeat in the Times newspaper.

Things look up when a new client, Mr. Saunders, hires Lockwood and Co. to be present at the excavation of Edmund Bickerstaff, a Victorian doctor who reportedly tried to communicate with the dead. Saunders needs the coffin sealed with silver to prevent any supernatural trouble. All goes well - until George's curiosity attracts a horrible phantom.

Back home at Portland Row, Lockwood accuses George of making too many careless mistakes. Lucy is distracted by urgent whispers coming from the skull in the ghost jar. Then the team is summoned to DEPRAC headquarters. Kipps is there too, much to Lockwood's annoyance. Bickerstaff's coffin was raided and a strange glass object buried with the corpse has vanished. Inspector Barnes believes the relic to be highly dangerous, and he wants it found.

The author of the blockbuster Bartimaeus series delivers another amusing, chilling, and ingeniously plotted entry in the critically acclaimed Lockwood and Co. series.

What a great story and the narrator really did well. Recommended to everyone, especially before seeing the new TV show.

Get a new narrator!

The author had a great narrator for the Bartemaeus series. The narrator in that series did a great job with the humor, sarcasm, irony and so forth. This narrator is bland and the voices all sound alike, except the skull's voice.

The author seems to be keeping options open and has dropped hints and left a lot of things unexplained. it will be interesting to see how many books end up being written in this "world".

The books are suitable for young teen readers but are also entertaining for older readers. These books are a really refreshing change to the typical books dealing the the dead/undead/witches - most of those books are just trashy sex novels using vampires etc. These books actually have a story. Kudos to onathan Stroud.

great book, great reading

The story has just about everything I like - funny, interesting protagonists, a mystery, supernatural chills, and does them all justice. The narrator is a great match for the book's lead, Lucy Carlisle, with plenty of spunk and humor, right down to her authentic Northern accent.

Jonathan Stroud Does It Again

I fell in love with the Bartimeus Trilogy (of 4!) and just recently discovered Lockwood & Co., this being my second. He has such a command of subtlety and humor - mocking adults, but almost as a whisper chuckle, and his grasp of the antihero is masterful. I love him. I love his books. Read them all!

Story Just Gets Better

Lots of thrills and a twisty mystery to be solved shows again that the team isn't just good at fighting enemies but also at outwitting them. And there are lots of enemies. Katie Lyons isn't as good as Miranda Raison but her accents are still pretty good and she really kept up the tension at times.

Best ghost book/series ever

I’ve listened to this book about six times now and ever time it just gets better. The depth of the characters and the other worldly ness of the ghosts especially The Scull who is by far my favorite character always impress me. And I think every one in the world should read this book so if you like spine chilling mystery’s loving funny and wonderful characters and lots and lots of ghosts this is the perfect book/series for you
