The tall, gaunt and mysterious Van Melsen was born out of Ian’s love of occult detective fiction—Algernon Blackwood’s John Silence and William Hope Hodgson’s Thomas Carnacki being among his favourite paranormal investigators.

“The old Hammer Horror actors were a big influence, too,” says Ian. “I’ve always envisioned Van Melsen as the amalgam of Peter Cushing and Roddy McDowall. Duncan Kay’s wonderful cover illustration captures this perfectly.”

The only complaint is that it ended

I love the character of Peter Van Melsen, all the characters are charming, interesting and multifaceted. The stories are brilliant and well written. Imagine a modern Algernon Blackwood mixed with the best parts of Lovecraft with none of the lame parts. The performance is compelling, Gordon’s voice is mesmerising. I am an absolute fan. I can’t wait for the second volume and the promised novel.

Great listen

The actors and stories are both fantastic. The protagonist is a fun throw back to a different type of adventurer. Can't wait for the 2nd book!
