Publisher's summary

The Way of the Sufi presents an unparalleled cross-section of material from Sufi schools, Sufi teachings, and classical writings as a basic course of Sufi study. The author begins with the outward aspects of the teaching most likely to puzzle the student coming fresh to the subject. He considers various attitudes to Sufi ideas and evidence of their absorption into medieval Christianity, Hinduism, Jewish mysticism, and modern philosophical teachings. The greater part of the book illuminates aspects of Sufi activity and practice relevant to the contemporary world.

Would Not Recommend.

This is not my first Sufi book. But it is the first I truly did not like. This to me was exactly the kind of book that can turn someone off to a teaching. It was mainly talk of things rather than Spirit and Love just a lot of historical data. Best way to sum it up. I think it may have been hard to get through also because the narrator did not invoke the Love of God the way I have felt when the Author narrates themselves, no connection to what he was saying was evident.

Sufi-ed up!

Great story. Discussed all of the history, types and touched on some of the belief system. The poems and stories were great. A little difficult to follow and the narrator was a bit sleepy sounding... So my holding my attention was difficult. Overall it was a informative book!

I give it 5 Stars if I could understand more of it

I have a feeling that shot and his Brethren, have something of inestimable value to offer us. However at this stage, I really have no idea how to assess what that might be. I kind of feel like a very precocious third-grader somehow introduced to James Joyce's Ulysses.

Poor narration

Good read but the narrator couldn't even pronounce the names of the author or those who he was quoting. I stopped the audio book, returned it and switched to the e-book instead.

So much to ponder!

I read this book soon after it came out and thought I knew it, but listening gave me a new slant. The narrator is a delight to listen to and my attention could be given to the words spoken rather than the page and those print marks whose interpretation sometimes seems transparent, at others the whole mechanism of reading gets in the way of understanding.

Why study sufism?

This book answers the question in many ways by providing quotations from classical and contemporary masters which are appropriate for the present day audience, but the answer may be summarised by saying “we were born into this world to study the Sufi way.”
The language is a very forthright and direct but those who are willing to have their assumptions and prejudices examined will gain insights which will assist them to go forward in their life journey.
