Publisher's Summary

Explore the Captivating History of the Wars of the Roses!

The Wars of the Roses were a complex set of battles, skirmishes, and kidnappings during the 15th century in England. They had their roots in the nearby Civil War of France, which greatly influenced English politics for years to come. Though there is no one universally-accepted start or end date for these wars, the major events throughout the wars occurred between 1455 and 1485.

The central reason for the Wars of the Roses, otherwise referred to as the 15th century English Civil War, was a tug-of-war between two families for the throne of England. Though both families were in fact closely related, they had split half a century earlier. Instead of one unified Plantagenet family, the cousins became Lancasters and Yorks. While the Lancasters remained on the throne, the Yorks were overlooked in the succession of kings. The Yorks became jealous, given their equal relation to England’s ancient monarchy, and when the Plantagenet-Lancaster dynasty appeared tragically weakened by the succession of Henry VI, the royal cousins took the opportunity to demand a new ruler.

In this book, you will discover topics such as:

  • A short history of the House of Plantagenet
  • Civil war in France
  • England’s loss and a king’s Illness
  • Treason by the Duke of York

Atrocious narration, poor timing, not recommended

I have read hundreds of history books over the years and have listened to dozens of audio books on history. This is perhaps the worst I have heard. The text is dry, with no real effort put in to making it dynamic or to provide appropriate spacing. I very much doubt it was written for audio, but if it was, then someone needs to try harder. As to the narration: it is like listening to a computer, overly fast (yes, I know you can adjust speed), with little to no intonation or phrasing and no attempt at all to pause between sections let alone key points. I am dissapointed. The War of the Roses is a stunning and captivating tale, if told better and it is rich with military, biographical, political and criminal fact. I will watch for a better telling.

Totally engrossing

Did an excellent job of researching and relaying the findings in a way that was not only entertaining but informative as well. I learned so much about how England (including the language) was transformed by the powerful Tudor Dynasty.

great writer

Instead, the amazing family tree and ancestral domain of England is my focus. War is inevitable before maybe this is because of the ethnic succession and tribe preservation

concise and interesting history

The motivation behind the battles. The characters involved are furthermore described in a very shallow way. Their characteristics are dominated by pride and not much more. I don’t believe ruling England was motivated by pride alone.

Real facts

Facts are treated as such and any uncertainty is noted in the retelling.-that is concerned with historical events and incorporates the facts into an enjoyable and exciting story. Recommended for your enjoyment.

This is a clearly written

It's an historical fiction, albeit pretty close to what actually happened. I enjoyed it this coverage of the main characters that played out the drama of the war of the roses.

lye-ster

overall a very good and informative book, however the choice to have an American narrator dictate English history is an odd one as he clearly struggles with many of the place names and mispronounced many of them

Thanks to this very approachable history

I assumed it would be filled with much more than battle scenes - there would be character assessments and lots of political intrigues too. And I was right, it was incredibly fascinating and I feel I understand this time period and conflict much better.

know about a battle

A strong general-audiences history, with a largely fluid and engrossing style. Definitely not a military history, but a straight-up political narrative. Otherwise, this is an entertaining book that covers its subject well.

Fun, informative, and historical

I don't know a lot about the wars of the roses, but I have always wanted to study it, when the opportunity came up for me to do so, the tutor in my university decided to take the year out for research.

Addictive and facinating!!

Very nicely written an overview of the Wars of the Roses. It's not for beginners to English history; I was reasonably familiar with all the players and still had trouble keeping track of everyone.

So yes

What a mess! Seriously! I know quite a lot about history and about armed struggles but the tug-of-war presented here is staggering. So yes, this is a comprehensive work that I can recommend to anyone wanting a thorough overview

The Wars of the Roses

Giving them texture and drawing you into the story, as opposed to a dry recitation of dates and facts. His ability to bring the story to life is excellent and hope to see more from him in the future.
