Publisher's Summary

Robin has made a powerful ally in the Duke of Lancaster. But he has made powerful enemies too: not only his childhood adversary Mortimer, but the sadistic knight Peter de Gray. Returning to England, he is awarded the fiefdom of Fernbrook in Lancashire, where he meets the beautiful noblewoman Joanna.

But the wheel of fortune keeps turning and as the years pass Robin and his friends must face trials and tragedies: plague, war and political intrigue are never far away. And when Fernbrook falls into the covetous hands of the irredeemably wicked young Earl of Burton, Robin must confront horrors at home which rival even the bloodshed he has experienced in the ongoing wars against France....

In the second installment of a six-part epic, Medieval Europe is brought to life in a multi-cast drama based on the novels by Rebecca Gable, author of the Scarlet City trilogy.

Featuring: Gareth Armstrong, Tim Bentinck, Will Bishop, Gabriel Clark, Clare Corbett, Raymond Coulthard, Gareth David-Lloyd, Barnaby Edwards, Jonathan Firth, Philip Franks, Raj Ghatak, Helen Goldwyn, Anthony Howell, Joe Jameson, Jacqueline King, Rosalyn Landor, Damian Lynch, Michael Maloney, Miriam Margolyes, Tony Millan, Darin Nagada, Nisha Nayar, George Naylor, Steven Pacey, Nicholas Pegg, Vineeta Rishi, Dan Starkey, Alexander Vlahos, Lizzie Waterworth-Santo, Finty Williams, Sophie Winkleman and Becky Wright.

Great audiobook, narration sometimes childish

I read a few titles of the Waringham series a couple of years ago and never felt like it was a children's book but the voices in this version sometimes take out the punch of the story. Robin is now a seasoned knight who has been to war, had kids, lost a wife.. but he still speaks with a boyish voice and the narrator makes him sound stupid and naive at times (might be the producer's fault, there are many people involved in a piece like this). It would be fantastic if his parts could be rerecorded. It's really a fantastic story please don't try to make it into a children's book. It's not.

Robin the woke warrior

The pace of the story is good and it’s a great way to learn more about the history of that period even cramming in Chaucer along the way, the only downsides being the main character is often a bit sanctimonious and very occasionally it felt like I was listening to a school play. I’ll be back for the third volume though.

I was completely absorbed.

I couldn't stop listening and now I'm impatient for the release of the third book. Excellent performances all round and completely to my taste. I've been transported to another time.

I even got used to the background music which to be honest I found slightly irritating in the first book although I understand it's purpose in creating an atmosphere.

I just couldn't bear this any longer

Having listened to the first book I thought I would get the second chance. With eight hours yet to go I couldn't bear the thought of spending any more time listening to Robin, Joanna and Lefrik. I really don't care what happens to any of them as the drone of their voices (or lack of) just was not worth the time. Miriam Margolyes was superb I am just so disappointed that we were denied her skills as an actor. I didn't realise when I got the first book that she would not be reading the whole book rather than just narrating the story. What a disappointment

Well written, beautifully narrated, Great actin.

It flowed so well, I was sceptical after a couple of reviews, but really was hooked. With moments of triumph for Robin, and of course sadness.

The chapters flow seamlessly and I don't know where the hours went, but I will be getting book number 3.

Rebecca Gable has such an excellent knowledge combined with story telling skills. I feel educated, and entertained.

Good but...

I am really enjoying the series, its very well done. It is very predictable though, especially if you've listened to the authors previous series, since all the same things happen!
My main issue is the hero acting with 21st century values, it's not realistic. And his constantly showing mercy to his enemies, only for them to turn up later attacking him and his family just makes him seem like an idiot.
But it is highly entertaining and I'll move onto the next book gladly!

Thoroughly enjoyable

it's like a medieval soap opera, with the occasional historic incident. I really enjoyed the twists and turns of the plot. Robin is not always an entirely convincing character - not really of his time - but thoroughly enjoyable nevertheless

Anthony Howell's voice is orgasmic

Having trouble focusing on the great story. AH's voice is doing strange things to me.

History through modern prism

I love a full cast production but in truth the whole story does not reflect the attitude’s or behaviour of the time. I’m sure the technical dates of events is actuate but modern day thinking oozes out of the central characters and plot lines. It’s easy listening but doesn’t give you much insight in to what it would have been like to have lived at the time.
