Every aspect of this book; characters, story, mythology and dialog, is so well thought out that one may feel this is actually a recanting of events and be so drawn into the tale you may need to set an alarm, in order to return to our world. I am excitedly looking forward to the ongoing story in the Second book (The Desert Spear) as well as the novella (The Great Bazaar and Other Stories) coming out in January '10.
The Narration:
An audio book is nothing without a solid narrator and Pete Bradbury nails it. I found myself so lost in the reading that I forgot it was an audio book. In hindsight I was never removed from the story due to the pacing, reading, inflection or tone of the narrator. In my opinion, that is the highest praise I can bestow on the narrator.
Developed and Well Thought Out..

What did you love best about The Warded Man?
The story as most for me had me a bit disjointed, but I honed in on the plot. The series is well worth reading. By the third book I was wanting more, not the end. For me a good sign of a book. A book in the future on a different planet sets the scene well. What was one of the most memorable moments of The Warded Man?
The dark forest and the changes, and the ability to show both evil and good are more grey depending on perspective or demon.Which character ??? as performed by Pete Bradbury ??? was your favorite?
The hunter.. the duality of man.Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The transformation, the hope that men who were good and do evil have the ability to change.Good Series

What made the experience of listening to The Warded Man the most enjoyable?
The narrator's skill in distinguishing each character and making their experiences memorable. As there are a lot characters and a lot going on with each one, making the story great because it isn't centered around just one hero.Great Story

Any additional comments?
This was a generally enjoyable listen with a compelling and well constructed world. The characters were fun to follow along with even if it's somewhat well-troden territory. It was easy to become invested in the plights of these people as you follow their lives. Plenty of tension to be found and some interesting ideas in both setting and how the world works. It's far from flawless but all in all an easy sit.. with one odd exception. The author has an odd focus on sexual topics. The female viewpoint character practically revolves around topics like getting her period, having children, and being harassed or assaulted. It's not entirely out of place given the middle-ages-esque world where having lots of children was important and people married young, and the character herself is a well constructed one that develops and grows; But it's still a bit much at times. Something also happens to the female viewpoint character late in the book, "off-screen" as it were, that was entirely unnecessary, obscenely gross and served no narrative purpose at all as the author does nothing with the event to justify it's inclusion. Maybe he does in a sequel but I don't see that happening given how it was handled here.
Ultimately I enjoyed the book and the characters enough to pick up the second in the series. If you are interested in some competently entertaining gritty medieval fantasy then this isn't a bad purchase; just temper your expectations, this definitely isn't The Way of Kings or Blood of Elves.
I also feel I should mention the performance given by the Narrator was terrific. His voice is great and he handles the characters well, no complaints at all there and that may even be a decent part of why I kept going with the book. Not sure I'd be as invested just reading this one.
Solid, compelling fantasy with a few odd choices
