Truly heroic tale

Treachery. Heroic selflessness. The outcast saves the day for the whole society and and comes back to stoically face his death for not passing a quiz.

I’m amazed, I don’t know what to say.

What do you do when you finally decide to listen to the audiobook version of a book that’s been your favorite thing in the world for 2/3 of your life?

What do you do when it’s so wonderful that it not only makes all the emotional moments feel fresh, but also makes you feel new ways of reading or interpreting scenes that are so precious they’re like a part of your very bones and brains and blood?

I kept going back over some parts over and over again just to process them.

This is also a book with dozens of moments that you can really lose yourself in. Just stop, stop reading, pause, and imagine what it’s like for each character. Imagine what any of them must have been thinking, feeling, expecting, changing their expectations.

From the end of book 5 through the last scene of book 6, not only Darren but others as well have their expectations about the future — theirs personally and that of their world — constantly being shifted and turned around. Basically all the vampires have their fundamental beliefs about who they are and about what “should” be, turned on their heads by the events of this book. And it’s easy to forget that the young protagonist isn’t as on top of things as he’d like to be.

In this book, things are definitely, fully out of his control, and though there’s no real illusion about that, he keeps his head high. It does all work out in the end — that last scene is magnificent — but in future books, it’s worth remembering to ask yourself whether or not Darren is as in control as he seems, and whether or not he can do anything about it (though the book seems to want to tell us he can’t, I think he could have).

//////
“Say yes, or we’ll have to take you down to the Hall of Death and punch a few holes in you.”

/////
The central figure of the trial scene could have sounded more deflated. I imagine the scene played as, deflated, with sharply contrasting bursts of anger (“have you no brains?” “Brave men who you murdered like vermin”)
But Darren’s “… that group agreed to it?” in the end was **perfect**.

Slow at first but on my god it quickly became my favorite.

I got hooked around chapter 6 and couldn’t stop listening. Normally I listen to these at work and pause it when I’m on break to watch something on YouTube, but not this book! Couldn’t stop. Loved the charecters, the scenery it described, all plot points wrapped up. Man I can not say enough I absolutely loved this book.

Intense!!

This is such a great series and the narrator is just perfect for it too. The changing of his tones with each different character was so very good! This part of the series is intense, the battle and Darren surviving the river in the mountain. But the ending though! -Whistles-

Epic!

As always throughout this series, I loved the narrator. He really makes it come alive. This was by far my favorite book in the Cirque du Freak so far, I finished it in one sitting, I couldn't put it down! Now on to the next!

Amazing but short!

This is such an amazing book the story and whole series itself is great! Unfortunately, these books are very short for how much they cost and i wish these could be longer. But apart from that it is one of the best books i have read!
