Publisher's summary

An American heiress nobody wants; a duke every woman desires; and a murder no one expects.

As a young duke, all Nathaniel wants is to be left alone. So when he meets Charlotte, an outspoken American heiress, he is suspicious of her indifference. Too many women have sought - and failed - to catch him.

However, Charlotte is unimpressed by his title. She has no interest in English dukes. All she wants is to leave dreary England and travel to the sunny sands of Egypt to see the grand pyramids.

Unfortunately, a debutante seeking to entrap Nathaniel gets murdered, and his reputation as a confirmed misogynist makes him a suspect. On impulse, Charlotte comes to his aid, unaware that her actions place her in danger, too.

Neither Charlotte nor the duke know that a highwayman interested in rich heiresses is following Charlotte, and that another debutante lies dead in Nathaniel's carriage. And unfortunately, the evidence soon complicates Nathaniel's efforts to prove his innocence and convince Charlotte that he is worthy of her love.

Some nights just don't go as planned.

Cute, but....

Grammatical errors or not, this was a cute book!!! But my heavens how can one woman be SO stupid when she's (supposedly) so smart?! Silliness!

Will I listen again, probably not.
The story was good.
The narrator was good.
The problems were tolerable.
But Charlotte was SO irritating!

Clean.

Narration

I’m sure the story is good but couldn’t handle the narrator so I didn’t get past the second chapter

Falling in Love While Talking about Moths

I had a hard time listening to the narrator who sounded very robotic during the book, I almost gave up listening but saw it was not all that long so decided to see how it played out.

The main female lead is an American heiress who is obsessed with going to Egypt to search tombs and has no time for men/marriage which she mentions every chapter, sometimes multiple times in the same chapter. The male lead is a duke who has women falling at his feet to be with him, but he does not want to be with any of them, leading society to believe he is a woman-hater.

This is more of a murder mystery than a love story. As far as romance novels go, there really is not much romance or even much interaction at all between the heiress and the duke before we, as the audience, are supposed to believe they are in love with each other after a few slightly funny conversations about moths.

There are a few twists along the way as far as the murder mystery goes. I think it would have been a bit better if there was more on the romance side of the novel.

I don't recommend this novel unless you are really into moths or Egypt.

Couldn't finish

This is soo slow. I kept listening because I was slightly intrigued about the mystery, but it's pretty awful. I am not sure if it's the narrator's fault (who is slow and monotone and shouldn't attempt a southern accent) or if it's just the story in general, but the characters are bland. The heroine is supposed an outspoken bluestocking, but she just isn't. The dialogue between characters seems forced and fake. The Duke is the blandest of all. Once the fake kidnapping plot was introduced, I turned it off. It clearly wasn't going anywhere special.

Grating on the ears

I realize that the romance category is not known for it’s clever plots, but this book is definitely in the lower end of the scales. It has potential, the story could be good, but as it is it seems badly executed. I cringe at the holes in logic and contradictory building of characters. A wife who shares her husbands fondness for gambling, is not likely to keep him in check.
Add to that a monotone narrator who ends every sentence on a low note and you have a rather insulting piece of work. I can only attribute my finishing this book to my OCD. I give it two stars because it could have been rather entertaining.

ugh

not a good sign when every chapter is introduced with a police manual reading . I guess we're supposed to put the emphasis on crime and punishment as the theme . Everybody is perfectly awful except for the heroine who everybody hates. In other words we're supposed to love the heroine because we hate everybody else. So I call it ugly.
The readers voice for the heroin is insipid otherwise she's just annoying.

Not a narrator for me

The story was ok, though there were some editing errors in the book. It might have been better, but the narrator made it hard to listen to. I think she could be a good narrator if she didn’t try so hard. The “American” accent was atrocious. There were awkward pauses, phrasing, and inflections. Not enjoyable at all.

Decent story, cringy narrator

The story was okay. I enjoyed the mystery and didn’t see the end coming. The main character Nathan has zero personal growth. My real issue is when the narrator attempts to do an American southern accent. I cringed hard and almost quit the book every time.

Could have been a decent book

The story is good, but the writing sounds like one of the bad harlequin romances I read when I was 12. And the narrator! I don't often give up on a book, but her southern "accent" is horrid and her voice is monotone. I'm only giving it 2 stars because it COULD have been good.

Good story

I don’t usually write reviews but even though this story was good the narrator didn’t do justice to Charlotte’s character. She could have added some warmth and feeling, but She made her sound stiff and robotic like.
