Publisher's Summary

The 13th novel of the Hugo-nominated, New York Times best-selling Toby Daye urban fantasy series!

Hundreds of years ago, the Selkies made a deal with the sea witch: they would have the sea for as long as she allowed it, and when the time came, she would call in all their debts at once. Many people assumed that day would never come. Those people were wrong.

When the Luidaeg - October "Toby" Daye's oldest and most dangerous ally - tells her the time has come for the Selkies to fulfill their side of the bargain, and that Toby must be a part of the process, Toby can't refuse. Literally. The Selkies aren't the only ones in debt to the Luidaeg, and Toby has to pay what she owes like anyone else. They will travel to the fabled Duchy of Ships and call a convocation of the Selkies, telling them to come and meet the Luidaeg's price...or face the consequences.

Of course, nothing is that simple. When Dianda Lorden's brother appears to arrest Dianda for treason against the Undersea, when a Selkie woman is stripped of her skin and then murdered, when everything is falling apart, that's when Toby will have to answer the real question of the hour.

Is she going to sink? Or is she going to swim?

We should be thanking Seanan!

She advocated and has dealt with hate for delaying the audiobook release to make sure Ms Kowal could narrate! The story is good, narration wonderful and it’s another delightful add to the Toby series

The end blew it

The ending was quite abrupt. I'm used to a softer easier transition to the end, some sort of follow up after Toby saves the day. This one is like " Everyone transforms. This has been an audible production." On top of this the whole Gillian getting kidnapped is old, and Gillian being a wench after she learned what she has shows a very small minded throw away character. After finding out Miranda was her grandmother named Janet, I feel like Janet and Toby's relationship should have changed, even a little. But no it's the same old rhythm because the writer doesn't know how to move beyond this rhythm. I don't know I've enjoyed the series but this might be it for me.

GREAT Great narration!

I loved this narrator. She’s perfect for this story and I’m sorry she’s not the narrator for other of my Audible books. The story deserves 3-4 stars, but the writing deserves only 2-3 stars. I think the fans of this series might disagree, but for someone who is new to the series.. I probably won’t purchase more.

Amazing, like always

I won’t give away parts of the book but once again both Seanan McGuier and Robinette Kowal made an amazing work of art. I am also thrilled that the Novella is included in the audiobook version! That is my only disappointment in that I listen to the books vs read them is that I miss out on the Novellas at times.

Enjoyable Listen

I felt the ending was abrupt, I wanted to know more. I’m looking forward to the next installment. The audiobook did not include any Novell that I’ve seen referenced. Love, love the narrator.

Narrator is SO DRAMATIC!!!!

I have loved and listened to all of these books. The narrator has always been great but in this book her overly dramatic reading was a huge turn off! It’s a book not Broadway
