Publisher's summary

The New Mexico Territory of the 1870s - 1880s was as wild and dangerous as any part of the American west.

Murders were commonplace. Corruption was the norm, and the Santa Fe Ring controlled the courts. Every man went armed and bad whiskey was commonplace, as was over-indulgence.

Rustling was, for many, a way of life. But it was a way of life that threatened the honest ranchers and herdsmen of the time.

Liam Clancy, Irish immigrant and recently-discharged veteran of the Union Army, had lost his young wife and unborn child to cholera. Grieving, he sold his homestead and headed west. More by accident than design, he ended up in Lincoln County of the territory.

This is his story.

Fascinating history of this beautiful land

A very engaging history of the New Mexico Territory. Well researched and founded on the real stories, it will keep you interested and make you better informed. The narrator, Tom Lennon, did an excellent job with this material. Highly recommended.

Enjoyable

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
This book reminded me very much of the old Zane Grey novels I used to read years ago. Filled with historic facts and places long before the great SW was settled. This story had a good story line, plot and ending.

The notorious Henry McCarty!

As I’ve said before, there’s nothing like a good western to cleanse the palette. I enjoyed the tale. Liam Clancy is a former Union soldier who after the war, lost his wife and baby to cholera, then headed west to the New Mexico Territory. The historical events and names of well-known lawmen, bandits, and ranchers added to the authenticity and feel of the tale; the Lincoln County War, William Bonney, Pat Garrett, William Brady, ranchers Tunstall, Chisum, and Hooker. The writing is crisp and fluid. Tom Lennon did a fine job as the narrator. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

An interesting history lesson of the old west

I have to say that I hadn't heard of this author before I listened to this book but I have listened to many of Tom Lennon's stories and I really enjoy his narration. This book was free with a code from Audiobooks Unleashed to listen to on Audible and I decided to give it a try. I also decided to leave a review as I appreciate the opportunity to listen to new authors. Mr. Knapp has taken research from different sources and has given us a story about a man and his life as a newcomer to the American West from Ireland. Leum and his family left Ireland when the land they had worked and lived on for years was taken over by the wealthy landowners and they were given nothing. I believe this happened to many people wanting to escape to the Americas where free land was there for the taking . Things were not quite that easy between war times, the different Indian people's , the Mexicans and cattle rustlers. This book tells Leum's story. It is really interesting and gives us a great look into what it was like trying to live in the late 1890's. It doesn't sound like a history lesson from school but an amazing first hand account of one man's life. And of course I love listening to Mr. Lennon. I was introduced to his narration when I listened to an author, Blair Howard that I love his Harry Stark series. You will not be disappointed in his work.

Good western with a unique focus on the inner monologue

I was given this book for free in exchange for an honest review, and I can say that this audiobook is a positively unique experience. Usually I like westerns due to their description of the external: the arid deserts, the harsh nights, the lawlessness and then increasing legal systems. This book was unique as it focused on the journey and tribulations of the protagonist, as an immigrant facings the sadly everyday issues of loss and hardship. Having a narrator with an Irish accent lended itself well to conveying the main character, although I did have to put the book at a minimum of 1.25 speed to not be distracted by the pacing.

Take a long journey through the ole' mid-West

This was a fantastic journey through the newly settled areas of the mid-west territories, where gunslingers and cattle rustlers reign their terror of the 6-shooter, and the rifle.
It follows the fortunate (most often) life of an Irish ex-military pioneer who just wants to make a decent living while ranching.
Unfortunately for him, there are others who think they should rule the territory and take other honest men's lands and cattle at the drop of a hat.
Liam takes matters into his own hands and becomes part of the Regulators who can see the corruptness of those that have more power and clout than they deserve and so they go looking for those that need to be knocked down a few notches and settle a few scores.
It seems that even some of these Regulators need to be knocked down a few notches also.
Liam's journey takes him into Indian country where he shows kindness to the indigenous people and they are, in turn the people who never forget, whether it be a slight, or a kindness.
I loved the flow of the story and the sequences of events and how the roll-on effect rippled throughout it all. A splash of history helps the story along too and I think Knapps writing style is consistent and creates the pictures in the mind very well.
I listened to the audio book version of this story and really enjoyed the narration of Tom Lennon. He added further depth and personality to the story as a whole and also kept the characters consistent. A pleasure to listen to.
