I Nearly Gave Up On This Book

I could have given up after the first couple of chapters because it was slow moving and a little boring. But thankfully I didn't because after a while the slow moving story becomes captivating.

It's not an exciting page turner, but an evocative story that you can see in your mind as it happens. I hope they make a movie out of this story. It would be visually stunning.

My wife put me onto Jane Harper. She enjoyed being able to relate to Australian places, characters and culture. After listening to The Survivors I know what she means. It's definitely Australian and in particular rural/small town Australian.

Every book is terrific. This is the best.

I love Jane Harper's books and so far, this is my favourite.
It is a wonderful, atmospheric story set on the wild coast of Tasmania. As usual, the underlying story is so
good you don't really care 'who done it'.

A great yarn

I enjoyed this book perhaps more than Jane Harper two last books. Well-paced, a good plot and I didn’t predict the ending.

I enjoyed the characters and the depiction of small-town life.

The reader did a good job.

Familiar plot structure but equally as good as The Dry

Great narration helps bring yet another very Aussie story alive. Although this novel has obvious similarities to The Dry in harking back to a previous time and someone returning to a place that has some dark memories, yet the plot is its own whodunnit. The character development, the flashbacks and slow burn of the unfolding story were as effective as they were in The Dry and if you liked that earlier novel then this will not disappoint.

Another great book from Jane Harper

This author is amazing - every book has been excellent, pulling me in gradually until I was well and truly hooked. I listened to It in 2 sittings but that was only because I fell asleep (it was very late though). I missed a movie I wanted to watch cause I couldn't stop listening. Steve Shanahan was excellent too. A book can be ruined because of bad narration but a good narrator enhances a great book enormously as it has in this case. I totally recommend this book to everyone, as I recommend all Jane Harper's books.

Another Jane Harper Memorable Story

Excellent narration.
Despite a slightly slow start, I soon became engrossed and could not stop listening - yet feeling that, on finishing the book, I wanted more - not because the end was unclear but because reading this book was so enjoyable with that sense of involvement.
Jane Harper has the amazing ability to make the reader part of the events. Her characters can be seen and heard by the reader; their feelings can be felt and their fears, curiosity, frustration and determination to discover more - are shared.
Highly enjoyable. Looking forward to Jane's next book.

Terrific

Oh I did enjoy this although from the start I wasn’t sure it was written in a very young way. But I became so fond of the characters.

A bit disappointing but then the bar is high!

Didn't quite work as an audiobook, and narration pretty unexceptional.
A slow burn with very gradual disclosure which normally appeals but sometimes you need to flip back a few pages, easier when reading as opposed to listening.
Strong ending though with the sea caves a powerful metaphor for the darkness of the past like a blackhole sucking the present crime back to the multiple tragedy 10years earlier that the story is really about.
Tasmanian setting a bit lack-lustre (I guess having lived in Tassie I had high expectations) especially compared to reading The Dry and The Lost Man, the latter her real stand-out with the SW QLD outback and the 'long reach' of the past.
However I am still a Jane Harper fan, but will probably read them rather than listen to them.

a typical murder mystery

although this was a good book I wasn't overly sucked into it like The Dry, I found it lacked substance and was a bit boring at times. I don't like how the author finishes her books I feel like there is no closure you just find out what happens and it ends.

Another excellent story by Jane Harper

I love Jane Harper’s ability to capture characters and complex Aussie communities. Read very well. Smooth and easy to listen to and get lost in.

Not Sold on This One

Loved reading her other three novels but felt like there was something off with the storyline of this one. Can't put my finger on it specifically, the reader was awesome and I stayed up till 3am wanting to know the ending, but I think the story was rather forgetable. I will say, I always find Harper's depiction of Australian scenery/settings fantastic and this novel certainly doesn't disappoint in that respect.

Too much Trivial Dialogue & Weak Plot

A long winded story that creeps along with boring dialogue.. So many times I wanted to abandon it, but reasoned that because Jane's other books were sooooo good, this one will hopefully get better, IT NEVER DID, Dont waste your time with this book, I wish I hadn't.
