Accustomed to being used, a jack-of-all-odd-jobs is torn between desire and duty in a short story about loneliness and wounded love by Cristina Henríquez, the author of The Book of Unknown Americans.

Alberto has been alone for the majority of his life, making his way as a restaurant worker and at the beck and call of wealthy and entitled Don Antonio. This time for hire, Alberto arrives at Antonio’s summer house prepared to attend to its regular maintenance. Instead he finds only Antonio’s heartbroken wife, Lola, and a task that could alter his loyalty to his employer forever.

was a short story. about the time I started to like the story it ended. Boo! It left so much undone that it was very unsatisfying.

for some reason I didn't know it

Because it s a short story, the abrupt ending leaves me wanting more character and character relationship development. The story gave the appropriate flashback memories to go with this unrequited love story. Every movie or book would not be unique if they ended with a firm resolution.

Unrequited love story

I tried to give this a fair shake. The voices were not enjoyable and made me give up. Nothing in the first half hour made me long to hear the rest

Readers voice couldn’t get me to invest.
