"I wish to preach, not the doctrine of ignoble ease, but the doctrine of the strenuous life, the life of toil and effort, of labor and strife; to preach that highest form of success which comes, not to the man who desires mere easy peace, but to the man who does not shrink from danger, from hardship, or from bitter toil, and who out of these wins the splendid ultimate triumph."
br />An individual who puts great effort into his work and is not lazy, he claims, will be a success. It is the duty of someone who does not engage in manual labor for a living to devote himself to the arts or sciences. He uses the citizens of Chicago and Illinois as examples of people who embody such a spirit.

“Citizenship in a Republic” is the title of a speech given by Theodore Roosevelt at the Sorbonne in Paris, France, on April 23, 1910. In the speech Roosevelt discusses the attributes required of its citizens and leaders to sustain a thriving national character, not least of which are a high moral character and energetic engagement.

A Return Forward
this collection of writings is fantastic. it harkens to a time when standards were held for people in every level of society. much of what America means today is found in these writings.

Highly recommend
Amazing set of speeches and articles by Teddy Roosevelt. I can't believe I am just now finding out what an intelligent and well-spoken person he was. So many quotable quotes that I ordered the print version seeing as it will be faster than trying to go through all of my audio clip notes. Took me a few chapters to get used to the narrator but ended up really liking the narration, very appropriate speed and clearly spoken.

Good book. Poor presentation.
Great content; but the reader sounded older than my grandpa; and, like my grandpa, sounded like he was wheezing nearly the entire time.
