If you don't mind repetition

It's understandable that the nature of hunting stories makes them repetitive and often predictable, but there's enough varied prose and thoughtfulness here to keep it engaging. Though for someone who's renowned for their charisma and passion, this work of Roosevelt's can come across dry and humorless as he makes clear to illustrate that his experience and knowledge is well above that of the average frontiersman. With that in mind, the narration is downright monotonous, with a distant, gruff lack of emotion. His voice works well for the subject matter, it just needs to be elevated with variation in delivery, I found myself constantly zoning out and having to replay segments. Still enjoyed this very much, and would certainly recommend.

Great writing, decently read

Interesting stories of a different era. Lots of info on the habits of animals and many fascinating adventures. Fairly well read, although slightly jarring to have such classically American material read in a foreign accent. Enjoyed it. Much better read than “Ranch Life and the Hunting Trail”.

Narrator is horrible

After hearing the narrator for the first few seconds I almost turned it off and only kept listening because I wanted to listen to this entire book. I’ve heard him on another audiobook and it is absolutely brutal listening to his idiotic accent and how he tries to portray the readings.

Wonderful book of wilderness and hunting

I love this, especially on long deep hikes. Unlike other reviewers, I genuinely enjoyed the narrator as well.

Enjoyable

The Wilderness Hunter

Theodore Roosevelt

Published in 1893 before TR’s “crowded hours” during which he became a war hero, undersecretary of the Navy, police commissioner, governor, vice president and president, The Wilderness Hunter is his account of several hunting expeditions throughout the west.

It was a time before that territory was fenced off. Much of the game he sought was more plentiful than now, but several species were diminishing and in danger of becoming extinct. Roosevelt speaks to this in the book.

As he seemed to do about everything, he acted on these concerns and is partly responsible for saving the American bison, responsible hunting practices, and conservation.

Listening to the book as an audiobook enhanced the enjoyment for me. The person who read it did so in a manner that you can envision yourself sitting around a campfire with TR while he regaled the group with stories of his adventures.
