Publisher's Summary

The USA Today best seller.

Inspired by a true story and soon to be a major motion picture starring Samantha Bond, Emily Berrington and Ben Lloyd-Hughes.

A gripping debut psychological thriller about the dark secrets in a perfect marriage. For fans of Shari Lapena.

I ended my marriage for a man who didn’t exist....

I have everything money can buy. I’m a good wife, but sometimes I feel trapped. And when I start an affair with a stranger called Ewan, my life changes in ways I can’t begin to understand.

Because Ewan breaks apart my marriage piece by piece and then he just disappears. He uses a fake name and leaves no trace behind - it’s like he doesn’t even exist.

Someone did this to me and now they’re waiting for me to unravel, watching my every move. I can’t trust anyone, not even myself - not even the people I love.

Critic Reviews

"Dark, twisty and enthralling. A commanding new voice in suspense writing." (Paul Finch)

"Samantha Lee Howe cleverly wrongfoots the reader and does so again and again. A fascinating study in lies, evasions and deceptions." (Abbie Frost)

"Samantha Lee Howe does a great job of painting a picture of a woman who no longer knows who to trust or what is real; sinister and thought provoking." (Jackie Kabler)

Wow!…

This book is a bit of a slow burn, which is a good thing. Very well written in the style of Daphne D. , also a good thing.
This story is dark and twisted as this genre should be.
The entire reason you’re aware there’s something evil going on even if the players are being kind and acting normally. I love that.
This story takes place in present day but has an old British thriller style.
The narration is dark and excellent as well as the writing. Well done, well done!

Mixed Feelings. 3.75 out of 5 If I Could

NO SPOILERS! The story was interesting and had me trying to sort out who was bad. That was the good part. I just don’t like stories about weak women and she never evolves. The whole time I listened I’m annoyed with her allowing people to take a dump on her over and over. It was a good but unbelievable.
So if that stuff doesn’t bother you, it’s a good listen. The narrator is also excellent.

Held onto every word!

Recently dowloaded this and listened to it non-stop on my round-trip drive to and from Boston over the weekend. It got me hooked from the start. I liked the pace of the book where things happen and develop over a longer timespan. If you like the psychological thriller/marriage type of books, you won't be disappointed!

Wasn’t expecting it to be so good!

Wow!! What a great book. Just when I thought I knew what was going to happen, there was a twist!!! Actually, many twists!!! Only reason I didn’t give 5 stars is because it was a little far fetched but overall, it was amazing!!!

Magnificent and original storyline!

I loved almost all of this fast-paced psychological thriller. A married woman has an affair and is about to leave her controlling husband for a happier life. Then the lover--and all evidence of their affair--just disappears. Wow, this is way better than yet another tale about a kidnapped child! I couldn't wait to find out what was really going on. I did think that the ending was a little drawn out, with too much time devoted to explanations. But what an exciting ride! Overall rating: 4.5 stars rounded up.

This is definitely an author I want to follow.

One day listen

Kept me engaged, twisty, unexpected! Worth it! The author’s style and switching between points of view flows easily, narrators are perfect too.

Yuck

The main character is horribly stupid and one dimensional and I legitimately hated her more than the villain. I couldn’t wait for it to be over.

This is one unrivaled British psychological thriller!

I had been having a problem finding just the right audiobook in my library. Eventually, I found this hidden gem and paid $9.93. I save my treasured credits for pricier books. Author Samantha Lee Howe pens a classic, suspenseful and complexellent mystery that gripped me from the very beginning and never let go. She interweaves a plot with beautifully creepy surroundings, suspicious characters, family members, twisty turns and what can only be described as a rare wow factor. Who can be trusted? Love? Hate? You’ll be surprised. I know I was taken aback. I didn’t figure it out until the shocking jaw-dropping ending. Narrated by Jess Nesling, her vocal expertise brings this story to vivid life with her skillful vocal expertise. I do so love my British chillers and this one is one of the best in my vast Audible library. The unexpected ending had me reeling. Every character is presented to perfection. Howe and Nesling make a perfect pair and I look forward to many more from these two talented and accomplished women. Highly recommended. Epic, I say! Epic!

Terrible

I thought the book had potential in the beginning but it soon became apparent that this was going to be a flop. The main character had no depth and the storyline was unbelievable and seemed to drag on and on. I found myself rolling my eyes a lot and couldn’t wait for it to (finally!) end so I could start my next book.

Enthralling

Okay this probably will not appeal to everyone, however if you're interested in an easy listen but still with plenty of twists and turns. Then I urge you to give it a listen. To many who don't or have never experienced domestic violence or control in a relationship, ( I am not referring to having experienced this myself) but have a good understanding of the topic covered. This is a very good eye opener to those that don't. It covered this matter in a very understanding and comprehensive way.. I don't think it is fair to give a bad review to this new author's work ( but obviously every person is entitled to their choice and opinions on what they choose to listen/read) Both the author and narrator made a very sensitive subject easy to digest, but by no means was this listen not enthralling. Packed with suspense, suspicion and family secrets a thriller that just keeps you guessing. I stayed up all night listening to this Audible book. Every time I thought I had sussed the plot, it changed. Maybe there will be comments like ' far fetched ' remember your reading or listening to a story, and that's what this is! Could this happen in real life - well indeed yes it's possible it could! I look forward to hearing more from Samantha Lee Howe! Give this one a go well worth missing a night's sleep 😴🙂

Not a Thriller. Or a Mystery!

Just the account of a woman relating her sexual encounters with the husband she hates & the lover she has on the side. Every single chapter is a sequence of how many times she has sex with each man, and how she feels after, and how she feels after her meds, blah blah blah. And her husband begging her to have sex & how she doesn't want to, and how she practically has EVERY luxury a woman could desire yet she's so unhappy and her husband is so controling just becoz he asks her to organize parties n some more fluff like that. I honestly had no idea what her problem is all along.
