Publisher's summary

So, I’ve written a book.

Having entertained the idea for years, and even offered a few questionable opportunities ("It’s a piece of cake! Just do four hours of interviews, find someone else to write it, put your face on the cover, and voila!"), I have decided to tell these stories just as I have always done, in my own voice. The joy that I have felt from chronicling these tales is not unlike listening back to a song that I’ve recorded and can’t wait to share with the world, or reading a primitive journal entry from a stained notebook, or even hearing my voice bounce between the Kiss posters on my wall as a child.

This certainly doesn’t mean that I’m quitting my day job, but it does give me a place to shed a little light on what it’s like to be a kid from Springfield, Virginia, walking through life while living out the crazy dreams I had as young musician. From hitting the road with Scream at 18 years old, to my time in Nirvana and the Foo Fighters, jamming with Iggy Pop or playing at the Academy Awards or dancing with AC/DC and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, drumming for Tom Petty or meeting Sir Paul McCartney at Royal Albert Hall, bedtime stories with Joan Jett or a chance meeting with Little Richard, to flying halfway around the world for one epic night with my daughters...the list goes on. I look forward to focusing the lens through which I see these memories a little sharper for you with much excitement.

Sensational

Not a huge Foo Fighters fan but I am a big fan of Mr Grohl now - love this book.
Well read by Dave, articulate, entertaining, generous and honest. No matter how successful you are it still takes courage to climb your personal mountain!!

Great reminder to reconnect

The journey is more important than the destination, and the destination is a resting point for the next journey. Powerful reminder of the ebb and flow of life.

An exceptional autobiography by a very talented man

What a fantastic book! I’m so glad that I listened to Dave Grohl’s autobiography as an audiobook as it allowed me to hear it in his spoken word, listening to his exact sentiment behind each story which I think added a lot to the book.

Whether in audio or paperback format though, this was an exceptional book by a very talented man. Dave Grohl has a gift with words as well as music and rhythm and it played out in this book. What a life he has had and continues to lead.

Dave really loves his mum and kids.

A beautifully performed 10 hour love letter to his mum and Daughters interspersed with entertaining rock and roll moments.

What a life !!

Told as only the writer could tell it, you travel through your youth listening to the stories you just wish you’d lived. Loved the stories and the amazingly people he’s met and feel like I know them better now

Hmmm. Be clear this sint a Biography.

Firstly I love Dave's music. He is a hero of mine and has been since 1992. But this book isn't what I was looking for. Over the years I have found Dave's over positivity and story telling technique to be a little annoying. When we read these things, I think we want the ups and downs, so we can connect with the human side of someone who seems so untouchable to us. Dave tries but doesn't get there for me. He is overly polite, overly positive and it seems every person he meets was "the inspiration that got him to where he is today". One minute it's Paul McCartney, nek minute it's ACDC, then George Harrison. It's like he doesn't want to offend anyone. That's ok if you are hyper sensitive, living in a positivity bubble, but some of us are ok with reality. He would never name someone for something, but you know what, if someone behaves poorly, then they should live with the repercussions, especially in the public eye.

Dave's career is so huge he could have separate books for the different phases. Many of us will be here for the Nirvana bit. That was brief.

I should have known by the title, it's a collection of talk show type anecdotes, rather than a detailed version of events.

I still love Dave. Just want to give my opinion as someone who reads heaps of music bios. Check out the Mark Lanegan/Anthony Keidis/Slash bio for a true 5 star read.

And what a damn storyteller he is!

Wow. I have achieved very little over the last two days as I was mesmerised by Dave’s story. I just sat and listened as he recounted the most beautiful, often heartbreaking, most uplifting moments of his incredible life. Yet, it’s Dave’s humanity that connects the reader to his story, that invites us into these spaces and moments in time like we are right there with him, experiencing the awe and wonder just as he describes. I particularly loved the many Aussie references, and the way he spoke so lovingly and with such gratitude, of his hardworking, public school teacher of a mother. Righto, this school teacher better get back to her job and try to inspire the future rock legends of this world. Thanks Dave, you’re a wonderful human.

Listening to Dave speak his story was just mesmerising, any chance I got to listen to this book I would put my headphones in and I became hypnotised with his words.

Overhyped name dropper

This book was such a let down. It was like being at a party where the guy next to you keeps overselling his life experiences and name dropping while you feign interest. There’s only so much “ then I hung out with this person, and then such and such visited my house” etc etc that you can take. Dave you could have surely come up with some more interesting stories?

Stories about Family, not Music

I feel terrible saying this as I love Dave Grohl's music and he is a genuinely lovely person. However, this book is so boring! There are exceedingly long stories about mundane every life like changing nappies and drinking coffee, and hardly anything about his music, his tours, his adventures and his rockstar life. was so excited to get this audiobook, and so very disappointed!

I cried tear of joy and hope

What an eloquent man . I was taken on ride though my youth with a beloved artist on a journey from a perspective I had not considered. An amazing ride though self discovery , grief , achievement, family and success. I hope they are more stories to be told

Not quite what I expected

I was looking forward to listening to Dave, but I've been struggling to get into it.

I think it's because I've recently been listening to multiple SAS/Navy Seal autobiographies - who tell you how it is and cut the BS.
I'd say he had a bit too much time to think about it and is overselling it. In the Interviews he has done, he comes across more genunine than his book.

But I mean like hey whatever man this is just my opinion. If you enjoy it more than i did, good for you.

Name drops instead of crescendos

The stories all start well, building nicely, vivid in detail, only for Dave to drop a name of a famous artist as the crescendo.
When he talked about his family he was brilliant, capturing real genuine emotions
However, he missed the chance to talk about the formative years of the Foos, the connections to the band mates or the catalysts for his great music. Instead, he just tells 20 stories about how he knows Paul McCartney.
The one saving grace is that he self narrates the book
