A detailed field guide to foreign business opportunities in China during the era of heightened rivalry with the U.S.

China dominates manufacturing and is the world's largest retail market, but for companies outside of China, finding ways to do business in the country is increasingly uncertain in the face of rising US-China tension, combined with China's crackdowns on the tech and education sectors.

Shaun Rein runs the China Market Research Group and has spent his career helping multinationals understand where the opportunities are in China. An American who's lived in Shanghai for 25 years, he has long been one of the biggest China bulls. He now argues that while China is not a must-go destination for all companies and investors, there are still many non-politically sensitive sectors where long-term opportunities can be sought.

The Split analysis what the geo-political split between the US and China and China's turn towards socialism means for international firms. It explains why corporations in sectors such as semiconductors and AI should stay clear and relocate to other countries - like Vietnam, India and Mexico. Yet principally, it makes the case that for most sectors, China should remain the main growth driver for even the largest companies.

Expert from insights into China's national policy reforms and its rising middle class will help inform international strategies for companies around the world in sectors such as finance, consumer goods and auto. China will soon eclipse the United States as the world's largest economy and these companies will lose out if they do not know how to invest in China knowledgeably.

The Split presents a unique and informed case for why the time is definitely now to capitalize on trends in China and create long-term opportunities for your business.©2024 China Market Research Group Ltd

Reseñas de la Crítica

Shaun Rein is a consistently challenging thinker and essential guide for anyone trying to make money in complex Chinese markets. The Split should be essential reading for any foreign investor trying to understand how a new era of geopolitical upheaval is going to make that task harder still.
Shaun Rein's The Split is a highly readable and richly detailed field guide to foreign business opportunities in China during an era of heightened geopolitical rivalry with the U.S. and accompanying shifts in economic policies and regulation on both sides. Drawing on many years of on-the-ground experience and myriad interviews, Rein offers a nuanced account of which sectors remain promising, which do not and where new challenges may lurk.
Based on decades of residing and researching the economic environment and policy making process of the Chinese central government, this book is a must-read for anyone interested in learning more about China's complex political and economic landscape. It presents a well-informed and in-depth analysis of the evolving and complex environment in China, and the challenges and opportunities for foreign investors posed by the growing geo-political tension and trust deficit between Washington and Beijing.

I read another review that dismissed this balanced and well researched account as "propaganda". I am glad I ignored it. As a Westerner who spent the last 8 years in Hong Kong I am well placed to spot check some of the material presented here. It is precisely if you want to move beyond the silly propaganda that abounds and get a proper and up to date introduction to contemporary China that you should read this.

The book reads less like an objective assessment and more like promotional material aimed at attracting foreign investment by minimizing China's real issues. Rein's selective use of examples and avoidance of critical discussions on sensitive topics.

In short, "The Split" serves more as a guide for cheerleading China's economic agenda than a balanced examination of its complexities.
