Publisher's summary

Jane has been many things in her life. A wife. A widow. A thief. A prostitute. Most recently, a woman seeking any means of escape from Grand Port.

Flying no colors and desperate for crew, Sneaky Lass is a damaged brig in no position to look too closely at any volunteers, no matter how ill-suited to sea life they may be. After a series of decisions Jane can’t turn back from, she commits one final act of desperation; she dons stolen boots, shorn hair, and the name Dixon Ables to take up with the crew of Sneaky Lass. Now, she finds herself in a position where she must keep up her boyish disguise or be thrown into the briny deep.

Concrete plans to leave the ship at the next port turn fluid as Jane becomes enamored by the mystery of the ropes, the lullaby of waves against the hull, and the wind in the sails. That the crewmen are far from the salty rogues she expected doesn't help her resolve. Among the filthy men, the roar of cannons, the critical eye of a whip-wielding quartermaster, and beneath the weight of her own lies, Jane finds something she long believed a fantasy—Family.

Even the frequent gaze of the fine and fair-minded captain isn't enough to send her towards shore…yet. She doesn't want to sacrifice everything until she is sure he knows her secret, or perhaps his attentions are something else, something more.

The problem is her new life belongs to the man called Dixon, not the woman called Jane. The longer she stays aboard Sneaky Lass, the closer she grows to losing everything she's come to value; new friends, the only home she's ever known, her life. Deceptions are difficult on land, but in the close quarters of a pirate ship, they can be deadly.

I'm not crying. You're crying!

Was the book good? Yes. Was it action pacted? Yes! Did it make me cry on multiple occations? Also yes! The emotion Kennedy Sutton gives to Jane and the crew of the Sneaky Lass pulls you into story from the beginning. You are a fly on the wall watching every achievement and tragedy that befalls these broken, yet resilient characters.

I would also like to note that while technically a fantasy world the historical accuracy is *chef's kiss*. It is so well written and I appreciate all the research Kennedy Sutton went through to bring us the first part of Jane's story.

The Sneaky Lass

The Sneaky Lass was fantastic and the story was gripping and at times tragic but also adventurous. I loved the voice by this author. It was enchanting. I wonder what will happen next.

Waiting impatiently for more

Immediately intrigued by Jane, the FMC, how she got where she is and how she's going to get where you know she's going.
Traumas are presented clearly but gently and tastefully so they weren't triggering for me.
Slow burn, steady development of characters, relationships and revelations sprinkled throughout.

The narration was clear and soothing, giving each character depth and diction that had me questioning backgrounds - which turned out to be relevant.

I love this book

Reread 2024: yup I am still in love with this book! I did the audio book this time around and omgahhh does it really bring the story to life!

Original read 2022:

"I envy those men, and all men. No matter how dire their situations, they will never sink so low as me."

Kennedy Sutton crushed her first book The Sneaky Lass! this book gave me serious book hangover. one of the best historical romance stories I have read. the world building and little details really submerge you fully into the story.

I loved the Female Main character you can really see the struggle she goes through in the beginning as a prostitute, when she decides to change her circumstances she takes up with a group of pirates under the guise of a man. it has LGBTQ+ representation, slow burn/forbidden love, and all the things you love about Pirates and adventure regarding the sea.

that ending though! half of me left along with that ending and I will not be whole again until I have book two in my hands!

Fantastic story!

This is such rich story, and I’m so glad it’s finally on audio. I can’t wait until we get more. The author did a fantastic job of narrating her own book and clearly has some acting experience. Can’t wait to listen to the rest.

Can’t wait to listen to the next one!

I absolutely loved this book. I’ve always loved pirates and pirate stories. This book reminds me of the real life female pirates Anne Bonny and Mary Read which I loved learning about when I was younger. This book shows a different side to pirates and love that I just adored. And even though I had my heart completely ripped out in chapter 26 I highly recommend this book and all its ups and downs. The audio was beautiful and I’m super excited for all the rest.

Amazing

Kennedy Sutten did such an amazing job narrator and writing this book, I was totally hooked from the start and grew more so the longer it went on. then it ended and I wasn't ready and I want the nextbook. This is one of those books that keeps you on the end of your seat and gives you all of the feels. I also enjoyed all of the emotions that Kennedy brought out in this book. She brought the characters to life and I greatly enjoyed every moment of it.

A Pirate’s Life for Me…

Wow, just wow!! I am a huge fan of Kennedy Sutton’s “The Sneaky Lass” Series. As I have already been whisked away on the Sneaky Lass reading her whole series; I now get to listen to Jane/Dixon’s adventures. Can’t wait for her to finish the audiobooks for the rest of the series!!

Highly recommended for all pirate lovers!!
