Acerca de esta escucha
A pragmatic framework for nonprofit digital transformation that embraces the human-centered nature of your organization
In The Smart Nonprofit: Staying Human-Centered in an Automated World, a team of dedicated nonprofit thought leaders delivers a discussion of the information and tools nonprofit staffers and board members need to effectively use artificial intelligence without alienating the human stakeholders and donors on whom they rely.
Each chapter of the book offers a narrative discussion of how AI affects a particular functional area in an organization that includes case studies and practical tips for the ethical use of AI. You'll discover explorations of:
- The steps you need to take to become a smart nonprofit and how to effectively lead a digitally transformed organization
- How to automate program delivery, fundraising, and the back office
- Likely future developments in AI for nonprofit work, including a more diverse field of programmers and data scientists and data sovereignty
Perfect for nonprofit leaders, board members, employees, managers, and founders, The Smart Nonprofit also belongs on the book shelves of anyone interested in the intersection of leadership and technology.

Do you want to become an exceptional nonprofit leader? You have a vision, you have a mission, and you have a burning desire to do good in the world. But that’s it. Starting a nonprofit seemed like the right thing to do but it hasn’t turned out to be that simple. Your skills are in driving social change, not in managing people, finding donors, and all the administrative headaches that come with running a business. But it’s ok. All of these challenges are solvable and shouldn’t hold you back from fulfilling your purpose.

What does an executive director actually do? And how can you lead your organization to a stronger place? Nonprofit expert Erik Hanberg wrote The Little Book of Nonprofit Leadership to speak directly to executive directors of small (and very small) nonprofits who are asking these questions. EDs, especially at small nonprofits, tend to be dropped into the deep end of the pool with the expectation that they know how to swim. The Little Book of Nonprofit Leadership will be a welcome rescue line.

Every now and then, nonprofits partner up with government agencies, foundations, and other such organizations to carry out projects with potential to change lives, improve scientific understanding, or for artistic works. For you and your nonprofit, that means drafting a grant proposal. No matter how impressive your vision looks on paper, unless your proposal aligns with the goals of the organization you seek grants from, you’re bound to get rejected. The good news is, with Winning Grants, you’re only a few steps away from the secret to writing winning grants.

Historia
Since the 1950s, nonprofits have relied on impersonal outreach to inspire generosity from their donors. They leveraged direct mail, mass marketing, and event fundraising to drive donations. With the introduction of social media, smartphones, and a hyper-connected world, everything changed. The new normal for everyone became transparency, personalization, and a feeling of ever-present engagement. In addition, donors also had new levels of access to information to the causes they cared about. Unfortunately, as expectations evolved, nonprofit fundraisers failed to keep up.

In the tradition of Octavia Butler, here is radical self-help, society-help, and planet-help to shape the futures we want. Change is constant. The world, our bodies, and our minds are in a constant state of flux. They are a stream of ever-mutating, emergent patterns. Rather than steel ourselves against such change, Emergent Strategy teaches us to map and assess the swirling structures and to read them as they happen, all the better to shape that which ultimately shapes us, personally and politically.

With in-depth examples from companies operating in various industries, Connected Strategy identifies the four pathways - respond-to-desire, curated offering, coach behavior, and automatic execution - for turning episodic interactions into continuous relationships. The authors show how each pathway creates a competitive advantage, then guide you through the critical decisions for creating and implementing your own connected strategies.

I believe fulfillment is a right and not a privilege. We are all entitled to wake up in the morning inspired to go to work, feel safe when we’re there and return home fulfilled at the end of the day. Achieving that fulfillment starts with understanding exactly WHY we do what we do. As Start With Why has spread around the world, countless readers have asked me the same question: How can I apply Start With Why to my career, team, company or nonprofit? Along with two of my colleagues, Peter Docker and David Mead, I created this hands-on, step-by-step guide to help you find your WHY.

The lifeblood of any free society is persuasion: changing other people’s minds in order to change things. But America is suffering a crisis of faith in persuasion that is putting its democracy and the planet itself at risk. Anand Giridharadas takes us inside these movements and battles, seeking out the dissenters who continue to champion persuasion in an age of polarization. As the book’s subjects grapple with how to call out injustices while calling in those who don’t agree with them but just might one day, they point a way to healing, and changing, a fracturing country.

Instead, follow the data: Pinker shows that life, health, prosperity, safety, peace, knowledge, and happiness are on the rise, not just in the West but worldwide.

Persuasive and Actionable
Pros:
Evidence-based, verifiable facts and references both known and new technologies. Helps to explain in practical terms what various algorithms are doing for different projects.
Very persuasive call to action, and appeals well to the target audience (nonprofits). It also includes a lot of practical actionable examples of implementation.
I really appreciated the new references and resources throughout the book, and the gentle introduction to new terminology.
Personally, I am particularly enamored with their subscription to the idea of microtransactions where individuals can control and potentially farm out their own data, rather than us being mined for data without permission, and then charged for the result. Seems highly unlikely given the current political environment but I can appreciate the dream.
Cons:
I'm still not positive that this will be sufficient for my nonprofit to take action. A lot of the recommendations are drastic changes to How We Do Things. Historically, that hasn't gone over well. But I will absolutely try my best to get senior leadership to at least read the book and start thinking about it.
That said, while I find the suggestions actionable and potentially practical, a lot of it will hinge on if a nonprofit can properly leverage a spot in a nonprofit data collaborative. If that cannot be done, then smaller nonprofits will not be able to implement, and larger ones will be more skeptical.
Overall, this was easy to listen to, an enjoyable experience, and very stimulating, both for my nonprofit passion and intellectually. I highly recommend this book, and sincerely hope to see it's vision realized.
