A great addition to the Monk canon

While the Charlotte and Thomas Pitt series seems to get more attention for Anne Perry because that was her first series, I actually prefer the darker William Monk/Hester Latterly series more myself, which is unusual because if you examine my library of several hundred audio books, you will see very few that are not "cozy mysteries," which most certainly does not describe Anne Perry's books.

I have listened to most of the Monk series available through Audible and several that are not, and so far, this is probably my favorite of the books, as we see how the different characters react to the pressure of Hester's being charged with murder and the urgent scramble to find any evidence to use to keep her from being executed. While in general I think Perry does a good job of developing her characters in each book, the unique situation in which all the characters are placed gives her a lot more freedom to explore depths to each character not seen before.

One thing that really draws me to these books is Perry's great attention to detail, whether it be in describing the historical situation (I didn't realize that at the time of these books, Scotland had its own jurisprudence system, with a jury of 15 men instead of the British 12), showing what an experience would have felt like to people of that day (i.e. the significant difference for Hester in riding the train in the second class carriage one night vs. the first class carriage the next), or the elements of Hester's nursing career (i.e. the vast difference in attitudes people carried for the upper class nurses who went to the Crimea vs. the lower class nurses who stayed at home).

I gave the first two books in this series to my aunt, a nursing professor, because I thought she'd enjoy seeing the Victorian nursing system, and now all her friends, nurses and non-nurses alike, adore the series themselves too! This is one series where you do definitely want to start with Book 1 if at all possible, but after that, I have not had trouble following a non-sequential order, as the books have become available.

Anne Perry is good but repetitive

Would you try another book from Anne Perry and/or Davina Porter?

I have listened to five Monk novels, and now have had my fill of Anne Perry's verging on shrill condemnation of the British class system and its reactionary attitudes toward women. The Sins of the Wolf ends up ensnaring the charming Hester Latterly in the criminal justice system--and I was disappointed to suffer through what seemed like hours of Hester's terror at her plight.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

The plot itself was very interesting, the social commentary repetitive and tedious.

Do you think The Sins of the Wolf needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

There is a book six in the series, which picks up the thread of Latterly and Monk's gradual romance, but Audible does not stock it.

Any additional comments?

It will be awhile before I do another Anne Perry. On the other hand, Davina Porter is great so I will keep an eye out for her.

Like the series

I'm glad I finally started listening to this series. Love the stories and the narration is wonderful. I wish Audible had the entire series available. I am reading the missing ones on my Kindle. I understand the narrator changes when the Audible versions return around #10 or so. Too bad. Davina Porter is terrific.

The Sins of the Wolf

Davina Porter does a great job in narrating this book. She makes the story come to life. This book has Hester charged with murder facing the gallows. The story takes place in a Scottish courtroom and the difference between English and Scottish law is pointed out. Monk, Arthur and his father Harry try to prove her innocent. Lots of descriptions of Edinburgh and Inverness makes it like a trip to Scotland. Hester and Monk are getting closer but when will they get together? Can not wait to start the next book in line. So far I have been unable to find the next book in the series on Audible. It is "Cain His Brother".
Hope they will get it soon.

Excellent Story

Would you listen to The Sins of the Wolf again? Why?

Yes, but after enough time passes so that I don't remember the details.

Have you listened to any of Davina Porter’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Heard many of hers before--she is always excellent.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No

Any additional comments?

I can hear another faint voice in the background of this recording. It's very distracting.

Wonderful!

This had to be the most gripping of the Monk series yet.

I enjoyed that there weren’t any modern societal issues to ponder this time.. it was simply a great story and mystery! I was held in suspense and couldn’t stop listening until I found out what happened. Ms. Perry is a master of the twist and turn!! I must admit, I didn’t figure out who did it until she told me!

Once again, Ms Porter is magnificent! I’m amazed at the breadth of her voices!

Yes, this is an excellent mystery!

Red herrings

I'm afraid the plot was carried off by an inability of the author to choose the end is muddled by an over abundance of villains and motives. A good cook knows not to put everything that's available into the pot. A good writer otherwise.

I’m sorry but I’m gonna have to

Agree with the negative reviews. It was too long. Really could’ve benefited from some judicious editing. The ending was just not a good fit for me.

Without a doubt one of the best narrators I’ve ever listened to.
However, there are Many other Ann Perry stories I enjoy much more than this one.

Nurse Latterly in Newgate Prison

Excellent installment in the William Monk series. When Hester Latterly is hired to escort an elderly patient to her daughter’s home, the patient dies unexpectedly while in Hester’s care. When it is found that she was given too much of her heart medication, Hester is arrested for her murder. I learned a lot about the judicial system in Scotland at the time, which was quite interesting to me. I didn’t know that Scotland and England had totally different systems of law and justice and that there were 15 on the jury in Scotland, as opposed to 12 in England. The investigation was a lengthy one, going off in a myriad of directions, which I was beginning to wonder if there was an end to. But, alas, of course, there was. And what an superb mystery and conclusion!
