Publisher's Summary

In Sunnyside, Texas, Jennifer Cloud is an assistant purchasing manager for an upscale shoe store. But after her boss is arrested, she's forced to find work elsewhere and ends up in her brother's chiropractic office, where she discovers a hidden passion for helping others.

However, when she receives an unexpected birthday gift from her aunt that transports her back in time to 1568 Scotland, she meets a dashing Scottish outlaw who introduces her to a world of time-traveling keys. But on a return trip to the past, Jennifer's key is stolen by a villainous band of time travelers who will stop at nothing to collect all of the keys for themselves. When Jennifer attempts to retrieve the key and sees her cousin kidnapped, she enlists a dysfunctional cast of characters—including a few interested suitors—to help her find the key and rescue her cousin.

Inspired by the works of Janet Evanovich and Beth Ciotta and carefully researched, The Shoes Come First is a lighthearted historical fantasy filled with time travel, suspense, and romance that's sure to please.

Fabulous funny intriguing!

Loved this audio book it grabbed me from the start! The story line was unique (an outhouse to time travel in wow)and the narrators did a fabulous job with the voices and accents. Highly recommend ! I’m looking for other books by this author.

Truly. Jaw-Droppingly. Awful.

Can we return terrible audiobooks? This is simply, spectacularly, godawfully incompetent. Is it the performers' (and I use this word with total irony) first time behind a mic? If not, why hasn't someone gently suggested a career change? Accents are horrible. Inflections are wooden and just WRONG in the most basic ways. ("Blahblahblah [says the guy reader]," "Larry Added. [intones the girl reader, as though it were an independent, utterly unrelated declamation]." Again. And again. And yet again. (At least she's consistent.) And the writing is so flat that it cannot remotely withstand this laughably bad treatment.

Keep moving. Unless you're looking for something straight-up camp to laugh at. And even that novelty will wear off so damn quick. I tried to hang in for a while, but life's too short.

Can you give a negative rating? I'd go for minus five stars. Makes me mad to've spent perfectly good money on it. Where's your quality control, Audible?

Fun Adventure!

I love great characters going on great adventures and this one fit the bill. Fun book! I enjoyed the Jennifer's personality. I thought it was funny. I've listened to quite a few audio books and felt that the narrators did a great job. It probably helped they had good writing material to go by. I enjoyed it. The trick though is to give yourself a distraction free environment to listen in. You can't tune in and out of this book or you will get lost.

I will look for more in the series...hopefully those audio books are coming soon!

Fun Book!

The characters and their vessels are hilarious. Easy summer read that deals with time travel, romance, family, and of course shoes. Loved the two different narrators. Great first book from Janet Leigh, can't wait to see what she comes up with next!

Not worth my time

I love time travel but I struggled to finish this story. I made it through but barely. Nothing about it kept my attention. Characters are shallow. There was no real storyline or climax... and the ending was non-existant. The narrator may have been part of the problem. She made the story more of a comedy to me. I can't recommend this book.

Needs a lot of work

I couldn't keep up with what was going on. It goes back and forth and at times didn't make sense to me. I easily got lost a few times and didn't know what was happening. The characters aren't all that interesting and their interactions aren't any fun either. Mostly three men all wanting to sleep with the female, even though they are all jumping into bed with any female they can. The narration wasn't the best, but I have heard worse. Overall, it was not very good and I couldn't recommend it to anyone. I was voluntarily provided this review copy audiobook at no charge by the author, publisher and/or narrator.

Sadly Disappointed

The female voice was monotonous and lacks character. I felt like I was listening to a 6th or 7th grader phoning this one in. She just doesn't give Jennifer the fun filled spirit she deserves. The male voice had inflection and professional speaking skills. I did read the book when it first came out and loved the outhouse travel device as well as the wild, colorful family Jennifer belongs to. I recognized this book as a starter and have loved how it has grown with Jennifer in each adventure. I guess I'll just slowly read these on my own and deal with the eye issues. The books ARE worth the read.

The narrators are terrible

Someone should tell the male narrator that the word is NONNO. All o sounds. Irritated right from the start.

Fabulous

The narrators were the best I have heard in the 100 or so books I have listened to. Storyline was very enjoyable. I sincerely hope there is a second book coming soon!!
