Cosmic fantasy unlike anything today

Within this cosmic-leveled fantasy tale is a swashbuckling adventure story.
Within this swashbuckling adventure story is a cosmic-leveled fantasy tale.
It works out nice that way.
Nobody writes like Merritt. Nobody ever did. His style may seem dated until familiarity reveals its timelessness, which is exactly what an untethered story like The Ship of Ishtar requires.
This is a jewel that belongs on the treasure shelf of every serious fantasy reader--or any who simply enjoy a good yarn.
Also, the narrator is interesting and grows on you to the degree you look forward to listening again and again. It will surprise you and, if you've never read it before, so will this book.
Note: This isn't a children's novel. Its adult themes will bore most kids below high school age, and its violence is at times quite visceral.

old favorite from childhood

It helps to keep the original publish date in mind, written post world War 1. The language is cumbersome but it holds a special place in my heart.
