E.M. Hull
Edith Maud Hull (1880-1947) was a British writer of romance novels, best known for The Sheik (1919), a book which became an international best seller in 1921. The Sheik is credited with setting off a hugely popular revival of the "desert romance" genre of romantic fiction, first popularized by Lord Byron and Sir Richard Francis Burton. The story begins in the Algerian city of Biskra when Diana Mayo announces her intention to travel into the Sahara desert, accompanied only by an Arab guide. Soon, she is captured and abused by the sheikh, Ahmed Ben Hassan, and further adventures ensue, when she is kidnapped by a rival sheikh. There are erotic and controversial aspects to the story, but ultimately Diana and the Sheikh declare their undying love for one another.
