A legend among Vermont cops, Joe Gunther has solved more local whodunits than a whole squad of detectives. But his latest case takes him and his team off their Brattleboro home turf, 42 miles west, to chip-on-its-shoulder, blue-collar Bennington.

On the edge of town, Gunther encounters the lifeless body of Michelle Fisher. Her corpse, pale and seemingly at peace, offers him no clues about who she was or how she died. There are no signs of violence, no disorder. Snapshots and postcards show a woman who laughed hard and lived harder. Yet diaries reveal a rootless life marred by depression and drink. Suicide seems a reasonable conclusion, but Gunther suspects foul play. The house is for sale, after all, and Michelle was its only tenant - one who resisted all efforts to have her evicted. The unsavory landlord is a prime suspect but is safely equipped with an impressively air-tight alibi.

To uncover the truth about the fate of this discarded, all-but-forgotten woman, Gunther must follow a confusing trail of half leads and mounting crimes. He draws near to a violent and careless trio of criminals whose leader is hell-bent on making the career move of a lifetime - and willing to step on anyone who might get in his way.

I have, as I am writing this, 20 unfinished titles in my library (including 2 boxed sets). But, when I want something soothing full of nice people and good police procedural I come looking for Joe and Vermont.

Joe and Tom and everyone else

I thought this was the most interesting of all the series so far. Great ways of tying it all together when it looked like it was heading so many different directions.

Intriguing Storu

This was the most intriguing of the Archer Mayor stories so far. I loved the development of the other characters, Willie, Sam, Spinney. Also, the Mel, Ellis, Nancy story was very engaging.

Best of the series so far for me!

I am hooked on the Joe Gunther series. My grandmother and all her family were born in and lived in Brattleboro. I have had lots of time exploring all the winding up and down streets in and around town. It’s delightful picturing them in the stories-I admit I have gotten out my Brattleboro map as a refresher sometimes. Even though this book was based in Bennington, like most visitors to southern Vermont, we headed that way and north to ski.
The story line to this book was particularly good-made it hard to put down.
I hope it is not a spoiler to say that I was also glad he ditched Gail-what a whiney NY princess!
Tom Taylorson is a marvelous narrator and makes Joe’s voice very soothing.

One of the best!

I was new to Joe Gunther mysteries //Archer Mayor and began listening with book 1. I was captivated by the character building of all the individuals in the series. I almost feel like I know each of their doppelgangers in my own life. As I was saying I began with book 1 and became so entrenched in the Joe Gunther mysteries I binged listened to all 32 books with fascination, escape, and enjoyment. I love the less than perfect characters, the thought processes each character manipulates and how each struggle with mental demons (some more than others) that make them real and come to life. I am also really impressed that not one of Mr Mayor’s stories (of all 32 books) repeat themselves in story line which is a impressive feat. My only disappointment is the next book isn’t out until Sept 2022.
