Publisher's Summary

Interstellar, from acclaimed filmmaker Christopher Nolan, takes us on a fantastic voyage far beyond our solar system. Yet in The Science of Interstellar, Kip Thorne, the physicist who assisted Nolan on the scientific aspects of Interstellar, shows us that the movie's jaw-dropping events and stunning, never-before-attempted visuals are grounded in real science. Thorne shares his experiences working as the science adviser on the film and then moves on to the science itself.

In chapters on wormholes, black holes, interstellar travel, and much more, Thorne's scientific insights-many of them triggered during the actual scripting and shooting of Interstellar - describe the physical laws that govern our universe and the truly astounding phenomena that those laws make possible.

Book is awesome, Audible is no help with the PDF

As others have mentioned, the PDF companion is referred to throughout the book and is a must have, but Audible doesn't have it posted and when I contacted their support they were less than helpful. Their answer is simply that "we don't have it". BUT there is a silver lining, you can get it by emailing "customerservice@tantor.com", which begs the question why doesn't Audible simply do that and post it instead of giving their customers the runaround? Instead of me having to do a google search to find another source.

The movie is based on Science fact

What did you love best about The Science of Interstellar?

Even without having a background in science, when I watched Interstellar, based on what little I know, I knew that they were trying to keep it scientifically plausible, even the many of the things we are not able to do yet, and may not know as 100% truth yet. The thing that I loved about this book is that I was able to know what parts of the movie were actually "science fact," and there was actually more of that than I thought there would be.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Science of Interstellar?

Learning that not only speed and movement slow down time, but also that gravity slows down time was something that I did not know. The explanation of how gravity works has bugged me since I was a kid, learning about Newton's falling apple, and then I was just confused by Einstein's theories.

Which scene was your favorite?

Talking about the genius of Einstein and how his theories couldn't even be tested when he came out with those theories, but they were RIGHT. They have been tested, and it is really a unique universe that we live in, that has attributes that we never really imagined, but the movie tries to convey.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

It's all based on real science!

Any additional comments?

It's important to download the pdf file to get a good understanding of what the author is talking about. I couldn't download it, but sent an email to customerservice@tantor.com and they sent it to me by email. I listened again after getting the pdf, and the concepts were that much easier to understand

read after you watch the movie

I read this first, then listened to it. I loved it. I wish he explained the bootstrap paradox, but he didn't.

Very enjoyable for a science nerd

This was a great book for anyone who watches sci-fi movies and asks themselves "can and how would that really work"

The book doesn't pull any punches when it gets down to some of the more bizarre aspects of relativity and quantum gravity, but he does a great job of explaining the basics in a way that non - physicists can rasp.

The PDF companion is a must have, as the book references it frequently. It appears that audible and Tantor have fixed the distribution problem. there are simple instructions and a password included for accessing the companion at the start of the book.

Phenomenal.

Interstellar if my absolute favorite movie of all time. This book painstakingly went over every bit of science in the movie and then some. It may seem a bit daunting at first, but as long as you download the pdf companion (trust me you need it), the science all comes together. Fyi- I "listened" to this book.
Thank you Kip Thorne for all you did to make this movie and book happen.

No I have not

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes indeed!

Any additional comments?

Not only an excellent book and well written for both the armchair scientist and professional astrophysicist alike (can speak from both sides). As for obtaining the printable PDF that comes with the audio book - just call Tantor 877.782.6867 select customer service and tell them your dilemma and they will quickly email you the pdf. Pretty easy solution - all you have to do is follow the narrator's suggestions that if it does not work, contact Tantor....

Great story - but not for an audio book!

The story and the science explanations by one of the few humans that truly understand general relativity are great! But telling this complicated science story in an audio book is crazy! Audi-books are made for listening in the car, jogging, walking, etc. How am I suppose to check the 73 figures "in my pdf companion" while driving to work?

To dificult to only hear it

This books is almost like a text book from The university. One read is not enough to understand the content in it. Maybe a theoretical physicist can understand it better. The narrator does he’s best to help you understand without reading/having a pdf of the book or the physical version. Even tho, I would lie if I tell you that I didn’t enjoy reading and learning from black holes, wormholes and sling shots. I just think that this isn’t a book for everybody even tho you loved the movie. If you know hard science and want to give it a try, go ahead but have in mind to buy it’s physical version and take your time.

For the serious inquirer of science

This book is amazing. I would recommend reading 'the cosmos' by carl sagan before jumping into this unless you already have a good grasp on the fundamentals of physics and how 'the universe' operates. I say this because Thorn not only prefaces Sagan many times, but also builds on his concepts. It's not required but recommended. No need to be an expert physicist either, but this book is meaty. It's going to give you a run for your money and worth every penny. Which is exactly what I was looking for. I was bored of books that only talked philosophy or opinion. It refers to a PDF companion throughout the whole book, which I think is necessary to fully (as much as possible) understanding his explanations. You'll have a much greater respect for interstellar and realize that nearly every single detail in the film is built and constructed based on the real science Thorn outlines. Highly highly recommended.
