Publisher's Summary

The Scarab Path is the fifth book in the critically acclaimed epic-fantasy series Shadows of the Apt by Adrian Tchaikovsky.

Ancient powers are waking....

The war with the Wasp Empire has ended in a bitter stalemate, and Collegium has nothing to show for it but wounded veterans. Cheerwell Maker finds herself broken in ways no doctor can mend, haunted by ghosts of the past. Meanwhile, the powerful Wasp Empress is regaining control over those imperial cities that refused to bow to her. But she draws her power from something more sinister than armies and war machines.

Only her consort, the former spymaster Thalric, knows the truth. As assassins seek to end him, he finds his life and his loyalties under threat once again. And in an ancient city beyond the desert, a terrible secret stirs beneath its stones.

The Scarab Path is followed by the sixth book in the Shadows of the Apt series, The Sea Watch.

This next book was just as good, if not better, than the previous ones! I'm so excited to read the next book!

Best Voice Actor By Some Margin, Deserves a Grammy

Not a big fiction fan, but Ben Allen's voice puts me in the middle of the action. He does such a great Job!

Best one so far

I’m found the series beginning to stale a bit. This book saved it for me with a new storyline.

I love this series.

This is truly a wonderful fantasy epic. I have not read a single book in this series that I do not enjoy. The author has the remarkable ability to bring the characters to life. I find my self falling in love with new characters and just hoping they make though the next fight.

Great book yet again

The Scarab Path is such a great book, but as the series grow - it’s becoming a little predictable- maybe because a lot of foreshadowing from previous books- over all it’s still a great book. I find myself deliberately taking the long way home on my drive just to finish a chapter. Anyway… great series - already have the next book loaded up

Too Much Blood & Gore

This is my least favorite of the series thus far. I enjoyed the story line, but too much time and detail spent on Blood & Gore, and Fighting for me.

Another great book with a great narrator

This book is solid, though it gets a little draggy right towards the end, but very enjoyable. I have a stack of other books to listen to and I'm probably just going to buy the next book in this series because I don't want to wait. Between this series and the Children of Time books, Adrian Tchaikovsky is turning into one of my favorite authors. His books translate very nicely into audio, which is the only thing preventing me from reading all of them in a week (I still listen at 1.25x because I am impatient).

Ben Allen continues to be a wonderful reader. I really hate readers who do bad voices for one gender or the other. When a male voice is reading female lines, they often come out as though the character were unintelligent or bored. Allen does a great job making female voices sound just as their characters are described. He also does a fantastic job differentiating different characters, even ones with the same accent. I generally don't need to have the book tell me who is saying what, since the voices are distinct. While I'm not overly fond of his New York-ish accent (as a New Yorker myself), he's still consistent enough among those characters to make it sound like an accent all its own. I'm excited to see it looks like he'll be reading this entire series. He could read the phone book to me, and I imagine I'd still enjoy it.

A little side trip, but probably profound.

Needless to say, Ben Allen is superb again. New accents required in this one. How does he do the female voices?

The story is set after a major resetting of things, and this, at first appears to be a side trip for some of our characters.

Two things are happening at once though. And I suspect this book has big implications in the series.

As usual, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Both the author and the reader are amazing.

Slow start, but speeds up

This is the slowest start so far to the series. It gathers pace and I feel like this book is setting us up for something much bigger later in the series but it almost feels like a standalone story. that said there is character development here that will have an impact later on, I'm sure

It's the first in the series which is focused on one region rather than to various parts of the world. Maybe that's making it a different read. Don't get me wrong, I still want to read the rest. This series is definitely not a chore.

Ben Allen is still delivering great narration. You get to the point where you know who is speaking without being told, every character is unique.

Continues to surprise and develop characters

The narration in this series is excellent, the voices of various characters have a regional twang which reflects their origin in the book. This adds a depth to the narration which I have not heard anywhere else. The pacing of this book is perhaps a little slower than some of the others in the series but other than that it continues to hit all the right notes, well rounded characters, interesting themes and slow unpacking of the mysteries within this universe. 100% recommend to anyone that enjoys high fantasy but with some real depth and not filled with the same old tropes you find elsewhere.

Best one of the series up to this point!

On the whole I enjoyed all the books of this series, though this one is in my honest opinion the best one so far in it, at least up to this point.

A new branch

Whilst it started a bit disjointed, the scarab path ended in such a way that opens the door for a new era of apt vs inapt. Ben continues his uncanny ability to convey characters which are both instantly recognisable and also relatable to their kin and geographic location.
