Publisher's summary

An island oasis turns deadly when a terrifying legend threatens to kill off visitors one by one in this haunting novel from the highly acclaimed author of The Girl from the Well and the Bone Witch trilogy.

Pristine beaches, lush greenery, and perfect weather, the island of Kisapmata would be the vacation destination…if not for the curse. The Filipino locals speak of it in hushed voices and refuse to step foot on the island. They know the lives it has claimed. They won’t be next.

A Hollywood film crew won’t be dissuaded. Legend claims a Dreamer god sleeps, waiting to grant unimaginable powers in exchange for eight sacrifices. The producers are determined to document the evidence. And they convince Alon, a local teen, to be their guide.

Within minutes of their arrival, a giant sinkhole appears, revealing a giant balete tree with a mummified corpse entwined in its gnarled branches. And the crew start seeing strange visions. Alon knows they are falling victim to the island’s curse. If Alon can’t convince them to leave, there is no telling who will survive. Or how much the Dreamer god will destroy …

Great read!

The story is slow at first, but stay with it! It has crazy twists and turns. It’s scary, and dramatic, and sad, but well worth a good listen.

Loved the story

If I have a complaint about this, it's that it seems like it was too rushed to get the story out. I don't mind waiting personally if I know it's worth it like for this book. There are times when the recording seems like it skips back or pauses long enough I had to make sure it was still playing. Please for the love of molasses if there's a way to move the copywrite info to the end of the story instead of dropping in durring chapter 2 I would greatly appreciate it. As for a complaint about how things are pronounced I believe personally that the narrator did great showing that people as much as we try don't always pronounce things correctly when visiting other cultures and it made it more real having the Americans making mistakes on the island name. Rin did an amazing job once again giving a creepy awsome story I can wait to read it again the unexpected twist I loved just like The Girl From The Well and The Suffering

lots of twist and turns

I really enjoyed this horror fiction. I felt it lived up to its review unlike most that list themselves in the genre of horror and are not. I throughly enjoyed the narrator as well and felt he did an outstanding job 👏

It could have been really good…

If only they would have edited better. There were several times the narrator doubles back and re-reads a line. He even says things like “no it should be like” or “let me do that again”. Totally disrupts the entire story. Also, the whole inclusion of the binary/gay/bisexual bits really don’t add much to the story. I get it, the author is trying to make it current. But it really distracts from the storyline.

Loved it!

A great horror story. Explores important themes of colonization, racism and American greed. Loved the scare factor and writing. Some parts are so nasty haha it’s awesome!

Romance?

I really wanted to like this book and was super interested in the horror aspect. I feel like there was teen romance thrown in that was completely unnecessary. I feel like it completely took away from the story. I stuck it out and got thru the whole book but there were multiple times during the scenes with the nonsense teens that I really contemplated not continuing. Loved the creativity with the dewata and monsters but was really irritated by the stupid teen romance angle...

Another Hit!

Another great story by Rin Chupeco! even though the story itself was amazing, I do wish that the audio had been looked over better. There were times when the narrator would stop and re read something or try again on pronunciation or something along those lines. It was distracting, one or two times I think I could have lived with, but it seemed to happen pretty frequently which pulled me from the storyline and could cause for confusion when things are being re read. Other than that, I loved the storyline and the characters. This book will not end the way you think, and I think it had a great twist in the end.

Positive feelings about the characters

I loved how Pacheco made me feel as if I was right there with the characters on island. She has a way with words!
