In this wonderfully crafted novel, a rifle, not the people who come to own it, is the main character. This story follows the rifle from its creation in 1768 to a shattering event as it roars back to life in 1994. Gary Paulsen is one of the most popular writers of young adult fiction in America today.

Gave me a better understanding of rifle history and how the firearms were developed. Great story.

Great for Outdoor History Buffs

I have not checked the dates on the author’s other tales, having only read (listened to) The Woodsman & this piece. The first, a complete 180deg of this. Thankfully it was a short listen, as if there be a narrator existing more capable of seething, sarcastic, & condescending intonation…this listener has never heard nor heard of them. Most surprisingly, from one to another, the author has an expert’s grasp on firearms & their mechanical workings / properties. The final eyebrow raise (alright…a tad of sarcasm of my own here), is the part where I must plunk down coin to listen to a well researched novella for young persons taking place during the beginnings of the Revolutionary War. To hear a hit piece (no pun intended) based upon the fantastical at best, impossible at worst attempt to lead a young person to come away with a twist upon a centuries old & proven adage. If you have left the building (pun alert) with a newly held belief that ‘hey waiiiittt just a gosh darn minute here guys! It’s TRUE! People absolutely DO NOT kill prople! Those darned old guns are out there just awaiting their opportunity to snuff us out! Why….if that mean old thing hadn’t imposed its will we’d be hand in hand crooning ‘Kumbaya’ in front of the bonfire!’, then it’s mission accomplished for the author. And strangely enough…opinion & hit pieces always seem to have the ability to be read WITHOUT plunking down coin. Hmmmm. Anyhooo….real head scratcher for me. Time to do a little of my own research…something we ALL should always be doing…regardless of authors or subject matter.

Confusing implausible ‘cautionary tale’..head scratcher ..

This story follows a rifle from the time it is made until the present. It is an interesting but sad history. Bound to hold a young boy's attention.

Sad Story with an ironic twist

Hard to tell at some parts who was talking because most the voices the narrator was trying sounded almost the same. But still a good story.

Enjoy

Great book until the last chapter or two. The ending was strange and left me hanging.

Disappointed
