Miss Whitsett, a loudmouthed stenographer with a custom for swearing, has a bad habit of getting under people’s skin and a keen nose for bull. Along with a drunk cop and an anal-retentive insurance agent, Whitsett is recruited to investigate a strange “accidental” death. A man has died, and three young children are missing. The only problem is that the accused, the beguiling Dr. H.H. Holmes, is already in jail for insurance fraud and there are seemingly no victims or evidence of a worse crime that will keep him there. The investigators embark on their journey to find evidence of the doctor’s bizarre crimes before he is released and able to disappear into the city and continue his crime spree. Whitsett’s biggest challenge is discovering the full depraved and disgusting nature of the crimes. She uses her wit and annoying questions to unravel this peculiar case of Dr. H.H. Holmes, America’s first serial killer. The team uncover the mystery of the curious doctor and embark on a strange odyssey through the mythology of the brutal and dangerous American Midwest of the 1890s.
