Editorial Reviews

The author and a full cast narrate the story of Daine's journey to the immortal realms. There she and her sorcerer companion, Numair, seek allies as they prepare for their final battle with Emperor Ozorne and the chaos goddess. For those following the series, the last installment is an essential listen. As a narrator, author Tamora Pierce's slow, clear delivery allows listeners to take in the story's rich settings and magical details. Her dry humor communicates itself through small shifts in tone. When other cast members chime in, the vocal levels remain constant, showing the care invested in the production. Pierce faithfully represents the characters of her story, injecting such quantities of wonder and sadness into her voice that no listener could remain unmoved.

Publisher's Summary

When a battle with death-dealing Skinners catapults Daine and her mentor, Numair, into the divine realms, the riddles of Daine’s past finally begin to reveal themselves. However, the pair must return to their beloved Tortall, for the kingdom is under attack and survival depends on Daine’s wild magic.

A harrowing journey across the divine realms leads Daine and Numair through danger to dragons; to a breathtaking confrontation with their great enemy Ozorne; and finally brings Daine face to face with the Great Gods, who will force the girl to make the most important decision of her life.

Filled with breathtaking peril, lightened by deft moments of comedy (wait till you meet the darkings!), The Realms of the Gods is a fitting conclusion to one of the great fantasy series of our time. An exclusive interview with Tamora Pierce about writing The Immortals Quartet concludes the recording.

Critic Reviews

"The fast-paced, violent action is leavened by bits of humor as well as the blossoming romance between Daine and Numair. All in all, a satisfying ending to an appealing saga." ( Booklist)

Great Young Adult listen

My children and I listened to this story together, and the kids didn't want to leave the car! This book is a continuation of the Immortals series by Tamora Pierce, and really should be listened to after the other 3 if you wish to completely understand it. It is performed by full cast audio, who's performances I really enjoy . If you haven't listened to a full cast audio performance, it is a different listening experience and takes a bit to get used to, but you will grow to really enjoy them.

Narration is awful

I dearly love this book and this author, however, she is a writer and not a voice actor. The person who voices Daine is awful. I listen to audiobooks with headphones at work and every other line that the actress delivers is in a jarring shriek.

Loved as always.

Favorite author, her books never get old. Diane has been my go to character since I was young. I was drawn to the character because she is always in flux. she may not always not the changes with grace but she evolves eventually.

Mind opening

Another great book by Tamora Pierce. It really made me think and open my eyes to things I had forgotten about. A great reread and inspiration for things in the future.

Worst of this series

As a rule, I love Tamora pierce books. There are a few exceptions, but this series wasn't one of them. It started great, but the books steadily declined in my opinion. I loved books one and two, but I found myself skipping parts of book three, and I honestly had to struggle to finish book four, though the ending was nicely done. The full cast performance was amazing of course, and it was easily the best part of it.

Especially like the author interview at the end. I love how the story wraps up all the "loose" ends!

Sadly disappointed with this listen

Is there anything you would change about this book?

a different narrator :(

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Tamora Pierce?

yes!

Any additional comments?

Tamora Pierce is a great writer and we have listened to and loved Alanna, Trickster, and Protector of the Small Qartet series' but I was sadly disapointed and Irritated by this recording ! l think She Was too dry, almost boring to listen to. that being Said, I will be purchasing the Becca Cooper Series!

Amazing story

Like all Tamora Pierce's books, this was one epic adventure, and was performed beautifully. I love that she narrates and I love that they asked her about her writing at the end. I fangirled hard haha. Her stories are the reason I love fantasy so dearly.

The only downside to this particular series is that a line is crossed between teacher and student. It doesn't matter that she's older now, he was always a power over her and that's not okay.
