Publisher's summary

Latter Day Saint Missionaries Garrick James and H. Reginald Fairchild Matthews IV are transferred out of their Mormon missions and put into a new church program that tries them and their constituents, LaShawn Jackson and Daemon Kohen, to the core of their souls.

Upon meeting their teacher, Elias Kingston, and the revealed church roles they are to embrace and act upon, the men realize they are in for the fights of their lives. After the LDS church discloses the Book of the Wars of the Lord mentioned in the Old Testament and the principles contained therein, they must walk a very narrow path. The church has no choice but to act on this revealed knowledge, or suffer the consequences.

Why are missionaries being targeted and killed? Why are church members acting out erratically? Is demonic possession real? Questions pertaining to the Dispensation of the Fullness of Times must be answered and acted upon, or else his house will be cleansed for the final preparation for the Second Coming of the Lord.

Is it too late? What happens when one must truly walk into the dark? When the Holy Spirit is no longer your guide, who will guide you?

For a first outing, Anderson doesn't disappoint.

The story is mostly well-written, and the author definitely finds a groove as the book goes on. As I listened, I was excited to find out what was around every corner for each of the characters. And there are lots of good characters—well-voiced by both actors—with a rangey narration and good vocal effects to envelop you in the idea of different characters thinking and feeling and speaking throughout the story.
Other effects are well-utilized to make this book play more like a podcast, helping your imagination delve deeper into the plots. As the book wrapped up, I found myself disappointed that it was over and missing that comforting feeling of reading a good book. I'm eagerly looking forward to the rest of the story that must be coming in successive books, and hopefully soon. Great read/listen!

Listen to this book!

It is my belief that the author has very intimate knowledge of the LDS religion and is a well traveled and educated theologian that may quite possibly posses inside information that would likely upset all of our apple carts.
The story is easy to follow and flows along, but is unpredictable. The added fx gives the telling an ambiance that isn’t obtainable from simply reading the text. Alluring and beautiful and sometimes spooky.
The characters were developed with seemingly first account knowledge. The young men venturing out in their missions, the old men leading their flock, the focal protagonist as a teacher and soldier-savior.
I get the feeling that many of these characters are real people from many different parts of the author’s life in time and experiences, such as chapter 24, feel very personal.

I can’t wait to see what’s next.
