Publisher's Summary

The last place Lord Tristram Radcliffe ever expected to find himself was right hand to the Llangardian throne. His parentage should have seen him banished, but he managed to keep his draconic secret. Now, King Reynold is dead. Long live King Roland.

The boy ascends to rule a kingdom in chaos, and Tristram must undo the damage of the last king's reign to save his people from lean winter and wolves in the palace itself. Reynold’s former shadow, Bet Kyston, is determined to root out King Roland's enemies, but his version of help may cause as much harm as good.

There remains a traitor near to the throne, and when the king falls mysteriously ill, Tristram’s strongest ally is forced to leave court. As his enemies move closer, the strength of Tristram's regency is more precarious than ever. Abandoned and friendless, Tristram must sacrifice everything to protect his homeland or risk not only Roland’s life, but his own.

Exceptional

The second in the series continues to provide intrigue and captures the reader's imagination of a world where human kind and dragons might work together. The insight that the author provides for the cast of characters continues to develop the connection between reader and the story. Of course, Bet, Tristram, Roland, Rhianna, and Sedonie are awesome sauce. Again, the story leaves you wanting more, so here I go to read/listen to the next in the series.

Nail-biting!

I feel this series truly hasn't gotten the attention it deserves: this second book has only fully convinced me of it.

This is what I always wanted from high fantasy that included tales of love: for the love and the tale to be inextricable, to truly support each other instead of one feeling jammed up against the other, and for the humanity of that love to be a sweeping as the story of the Kingdom itself, without even one false note of mawkish sentimentality.

Truly lovely. if I had read these books at 14 or 24, I might have had a different outlook.

A good one

it is difficult for me to get through political dramas. I took plenty of breaks and am glad to have gottenn through this one. Praises upon the writers for continuing their great character development and showing new aspects of their characters.

Many more praises to the narrators who as ever are experts in their craft.

Fun read!

I liked the first book better mostly because the number of perspectives the story was split amongst was nearly half to this one. still very much enjoyed it, and fell for a few more characters. I liked Gillian a lot in the first books and adored her and Maddox here. The family drama and entanglements were interesting and really enjoyed the merging of the dragon and human alliances. Gonna start the next book right away!

Great addition to the series

I loved this book more than the first, and I really enjoyed the new characters and relationships that were added. I felt invested in them all and their journeys. Can’t wait for the next book.
