I enjoyed learning about the eider duck down. I really enjoyed the characters and what a wonderful friendship they all had.

He is an amazing writer, leaving the listener with the feelings of beauty and awe.

Powerfully observant

With great attention to the island and the three people on it, Rebanks describes an ancient practice in such detail that it should be boring, but never is. His fascination is infectious. He presents island life compellingly, without slipping over into cloying coziness. The quiet, isolation, and simplicity are both the attraction and the frustration.

Unlike his earlier books, in which he is the insider sharing what he understands better than his readers, here he is the outsider sharing what he knows to be observations with limited insight. He is a shepherd and a man on an island of ducks and women. He never pretends otherwise. This makes it different than his first books, as it must be to be honest. While I prefer the earlier books, this is very good, and I’m glad this excellent writer is tackling new topics.
