From ADHD and dyslexia to autism, the number of diagnosis categories listed by the American Psychiatric Association has tripled in the last fifty years. With so many affected, it is time to revisit our perceptions of people with disabilities. Psychologist and educator Thomas Armstrong illuminates a new understanding of neuropsychological disorders. He argues that if they are a part of the natural diversity of the human brain, they cannot simply be defined as illnesses. Armstrong explores the evolutionary advantages, special skills, and other positive dimensions of these conditions.

Autism therapy typically focuses on ridding individuals of “autistic” symptoms such as difficulties interacting socially, problems in communicating, sensory challenges, and repetitive behavior patterns. Now Dr. Barry M. Prizant offers a new and compelling paradigm: The most successful approaches to autism don’t aim at fixing a person by eliminating symptoms, but rather seeking to understand the individual’s experience and what underlies the behavior. Rather than curb these behaviors, it’s better to enhance abilities, build on strengths, and offer supports.

Helpful for better understanding my son
I really appreciate the author's positive perspective. My son is eight and has autism. A lot of material I've read about autism gives me information but also leaves me feeling sad about this problem that my son has. This book didn't do that. This book looks at these children with a positive perspective and acknowledges their positive attributes and I think that is incredibly valuable. Thanks, Kim Gallo.

Lots of positive information
The main thing I see about this book is the care and concern from the author in sharing their extensive experience and knowledge about this subject. They obviously understand that proper handling can bring about benefits for the children.

Essential listening
Wonderful audiobook that should be essential listening for all parents, caregivers, and educators of neurodivergent individuals. It’s overdue time to better understand neurodivergent and neurotypical brains, behaviors, and how we can support them to create a healthy and safe environment

Super interesting listen!
Very insightful! This audiobook gives an in-depth explanation of what exactly being neurodivergent means, and gives you pretty good advice on different ways to interact with others who might process things in a different way than you might be used to. Helps break through the stereotypes to get down to the truth to better help understand things that neurotypicals often have a much harder time comprehending and accommodating.

A Parent’s must read!
Being an Occupational therapist working with children with Autism and a mother of a child with ADHD, I have to say that you never sto learning from this two diagnosis. I try
to keep up with new strategies and new treatment options for both. This book help me understand a new language on autism and different ways children can use sensory stimulation and self regulation in a new and improved way of doing it than before. highly recommend it.

Expansive Perspective
Found this to be a foundational resource for reframing cultural definitions and expectations about ADHD. The author synthesizes different disciplinary commentaries on the topic, and offers a more empowering perspective that frames ADHD as a unique set of traits that can be learned from, and platformed instead of being overrated and suppressed. The narrator was easy to understand and follow, content was reassuring and inspirational :)

An Excellent Resource
The author's approach to understanding neurodivergent minds and how they differ from neurotypical minds was both informative and insightful. The book challenges the traditional perspective of autism and ADHD being disorders that need to be fixed, and instead, encourages readers to embrace and celebrate the unique strengths and abilities of those who are neurodivergent. As someone who has a family member with autism, this book has changed my thoughts and feelings about the diagnosis and how to approach it in a more positive way. The author does an excellent job of providing practical tips and strategies for parents and educators on how to best support and empower neurodivergent individuals. Overall, I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to gain a better understanding of autism and ADHD and how to view them through a different lens.
